Celebrate International Bacon Day in Dallas

by Steven Doyle

The Sunday before Labor Day is officially International Bacon Day. We all really get a kick out of these reasons to celebrate, no matter how coerced they may be, but bacon has every right to be a true holiday that should be replete with Hallmark loving, gift exchanges, party hats, the day off from work and much ballyhoo. All businesses should close with the exception of IHOP and Waffle House where bacon runs amok.

In honor of Bacon Day we bring you five bacony ideas that will help you celebrate the holiday with a crunch.   Continue reading

Quest For Ultimate Burger: Second Floor Bistro

by Rob Banes

Last week’s burger quest took our group to the Westin Galleria Hotel to try the burger offering at The Second Floor Bistro-Bar whose kitchen is headed up by Chef J. Chastain and overseen by Scott Gottlich owner of both Second Floor and Bijoux. At lunch Second Floor features a variety of soups, salads, sandwiches and entrées such as hand rolled fettuccini, risotto and house made gnocchi.

As intriguing as those dishes sounded, we were there were burgers and a few moments after sitting, our server took our drink and lunch orders. I ordered the Second Floor Blue Burger cooked medium which featured blue cheese, pancetta and grilled onions for $14.50. The regular cheeseburger comes with white cheddar, gruyere Swiss or jack cheese. About 10-15 minutes later my burger was placed before me.     Continue reading

The Grapevine Opens Grill

by Shannon Roper

I would venture to say that most people who have a cocktail from time to time in the Uptown area have ventured into The Grapevine.

This all purpose clubby bar features the best  patio that is blocked from vision on the street level, and features a covered outdoor bar and gargantuan television for watching games and episodes of Glee en masse. For those wishing for more rowdier escapades, the compound also features a less than half court basketball court that has a galley of tables along the fence line.   Continue reading

Food Truck Rally and Beer Tasting

by Crave Staff

One of the most exciting developments in the restaurant world today is the emergence of the gourmet food truck. While Dallas has lagged behind other major cities around the country, it seems that the City Council has finally worked out the bugs in the system to accommodate this exciting trend. Throughout the summer Sigel’s  has hosted gourmet food trucks serving a variety of  cuisines prepared fresh by some of Dallas’ most innovative chefs.

Here is all the info you will need for the First Annual Food Truck Rally:    Continue reading

Step Up To DFW Food Challenges

by Steven Doyle

You’ve seen Adam Richman take on piles of chicken fried steaks, burgers, ghost pepper laden wings and so much more. The man is an eating machine that can’t stop. The Travel Channel star is taking his show to another level by inviting his viewers (you know you watch) to go into competition with this master of gluttony.

To get on the show Man v. Food Nation might take a little bit of P.T. Barnum know-how and the ability to shovel in your pie hole a whole lot of pie. Richman was recently in Dallas with his one man circus filming a few challenges the program created, but there are plenty of agonizing challenges in DFW without making them up for television.

Need some help with ideas on what to tackle in the DFW area? Crave came up with a few that you can enjoy after the jump:   Continue reading

A Look at Penn Jillete’s Book “Oh, God”

by Steven Doyle

We are a food and entertainment website, so what are we doing reading a book? It was a bit entertaining and included bits about bacon, so it greatly qualifies. We are not making judgment  on Jillete but thought this was entertaining, and the visuals tore me up. The book “Oh, God” is otherwise fairly mundane except for the passage where Penn Jillete explains how he was partially responsible in converting a Hasidic Jew and sharing his first non-kosher meal.

The Hasidic man had listened to Jillete on the radio for some time and enjoyed the Penn Radio program that was formerly on Free FM and ended in 2007. His show was known for more than a few on-air antics such as the time when during Lent, Penn requested his listeners go to McDonalds on Friday morning and purchase all the Filet-O-Fish sandwiches, thus forcing Catholic families with screaming children to eat beef. Penn hoped that the children would realize that eating meat would not send them to hell.   Continue reading
