Tales Of The Cocktail 2012

by Steven Doyle

This year marks the tenth anniversary of Tales of the Cocktail, the largest bartending convention in the world, held each year in New Orleans. Last year we brought you up-to-the-minute coverage as our reporters on the scene slugged through many dozens of hospitality suites, sampling the latest in cocktails.

This year we have more correspondents attending Tales and a few well respected photographers that will bring us great news and glad tidings from the Crescent City, including the newest addition of a Dallas cocktail event taking place Wednesday morning.             Continue reading

A Visit To Tate’s Craft Cocktails

by Steven Doyle and Jason Kosmas

I stopped in Tate’s Craft Cocktails located on McKinney Avenue last week when I was tooling around town with cocktail maven Jason Kosmas and we met the new manager and chief barman, JW Tate. JW is the son of the owner and comes to Dallas from Winston-Salem, North Carolina where the original bar is located.

You may recall Tate’s opened in Dallas back in December with Matt Ceneviva at the helm. I spoke with Matt about JW and he said, “I worked with JW when he first started bartending and the grasshopper has actually outreached the master.”          Continue reading

Jason Kosmas Designs Malai Kitchen’s Cocktail Menu

by Steven Doyle

Earlier this week we announced the new brand of spirits from the 86 Co. and local bartending wunderkind Jason Kosmas as he introduced his Aylesbury Duck Vodka and Cana Brava Rum. We were wondering how these sprits would actually taste in a cocktail and Kosmas was eager to show us.

The first restaurant to actually receive shipment of the brand was Malai Kitchen where Kosmas is the consulting barman. This week Malai announced their new summer cocktail menu designed by Kosmas where he uses his spirits in a few of the potent potables.     Continue reading

Local Garden District Bloody Mary Makes A Splash

by Steven Doyle

Aunt Gladys and her mother Lily knew how to entertain in the old tradition of southern comfort. That is why they always had a mix of their home-concocted bloody Mary mix on hand for guests who might drop in unexpectedly. Today the niece, Stephanie Sanoja has bottled the traditional family recipe for all to enjoy.

In 2008 Sanoja was a marketing director for a firm and left that job to become a full-time mother. We are not sure if sampling bloody Mary’s is part of the mom gig, and if it is we all need to consider this as a vocation, but Sanoja took to experimenting with the recipe to perfect a perfectly balanced product she could bottle and bring to your home in that same gentility her family considered for so many years.          Continue reading

A Look At Vijay Sadhu’s Pepper Smash

by Steven Doyle

We checked out Vijay Sadhu’s latest dining concept yesterday in his old Sutra location in Plano’s Shops at Legacy. Pepper Smash looks to be a perfect combination of cool craft cocktails, tasty bites and a load of whimsical fun.

There is no doubt that Sadhu can cook. He has proven his chops time and again from his stints at restaurants such as Clay Pit in Addison (back when it was actually good), Bukhara Grill in Richardson, and the James Beard nominated Samar by Stephan Pyles.    Continue reading
