We Checked Out Primebar’s $5 Burger Wednesday

by Steven Doyle

The love affair in Dallas continues with one of its favorite mistresses, the burger. Sure, Dallas is still seeing others like the taco. But Dallas dismissed FroYo and that little sweetheart, cupcake. Fickle and faddish sure, but Dallas’ main squeeze is still the gorgeous burger.

There are plenty of burger options rolling through Dallas. Some of our favorites can cost just a few dollars, and  some of the best are in excess of ten bucks. Last week we heard about a special burger at Primebar and we promised to investigate. But the story was not just that Primebar had a delicious burger, but that on Wednesdays the burger cost just five dollars all day. This past Wednesday we ate every one they had to offer.        Continue reading

Holiday Vignettes: Chef Abraham Salum

by Steven Doyle   photo by Robert Bostick

We have featured Abraham Salum several times on craveDFW throughout the year, and he is one chef that we never grow tired of chatting with. Abraham always has an entertaining story to share and truly loves his craft. He makes our job here so very simple, offering sage advice like he did in a  tamale series.

Abraham is the owner of Salum, the New American restaurant tucked away on the outskirts of Uptown at Cole and Fitzhugh, and Komali. Komali is a fun and energetic restaurant that serves authentic Mexican cuisine much like he experienced when living in Mexico City.   Continue reading

Tamales at La Popular Feed the Community (And They Want To Give You 10 Dozen Free!)

by Steven Doyle    photos by Robert Bostick

Today we visit with the absolute giants in the tamale industry, La Popular. The Tamale House has gained a reputation for not only making quality tamales year round, but also takes pride in giving back to the community as we will find out with this Q&A with both Jesse Moreno Sr. and Jr. at La Popular.

La Popular is one of the most respected tamale makers in Dallas and for a good reason. The tamale continually makes the top of any best tamale list since they opened in 1984. There are currently two locations for La Popular, one in the Lakewood area and the other in Shed #1 at the Dallas Farmers Market. You ma pick up fresh, hot tamales for the holidays at either location, even on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve.

Jump to join the conversation with the Moreno family.   Continue reading

Perry’s Opens a Big-City Steakhouse in Frisco

Perry’s Famous Pork Chop

Perry’s Famous Pork Chop

by Andrew Chalk

Frisco is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, predicted to outsize Plano in the 2020s. One needs little confirmation of the big-city intentions than a visit to the new Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille just opened in Stonebriar Centre (on the east side of Parkwood just south of Gaylord Pkwy. Google maps wrongly shows it north of Warren Parkway for some reason). Continue reading

Adelmo’s Celebrating 25 Years

by Steven Doyle

Tucked neat and tidy on Cole Avenue you might spy Adelmo’s, the cute Tuscan hide-away that is perfectly romantic and sultry.

Adelmo’s has survived the many faces of the Dallas restaurant scene and is pretty much today as it was 25 years ago when Adelmo Banchetti first opened his doors. Here you will find the obligatory Chianti served up with dreamy dishes such as Osso Bucco and a variety of house-made pastas. Each day you will discover a new chef’s menu hand-scrawled outside the front door listing off the day’s specials drawn from fresh ingredients just delivered. There are several choices for dessert included, and we recommend the warm bread pudding with a brandy caramel sauce. Malai Pie & Recipe

by Steven Doyle

I have always been enamored by the incredible dishes at Malai Kitchen in West Village in Uptown Dallas, but wanted to share what was probably the best part of any of the meals I have had there – the coconut pie.

I loved the pie so very much that we called Malai and asked for the recipe.  Now we are not normally a recipe loving web site, but this pie is special.  It deserves all the love and attention it can garner.  If you can bake pies, use the recipe.  If you cannot, call them and reserve a pie for your Thanksgiving table.

Did I say it was good?     Continue reading
