Malai Pie & Recipe

by Steven Doyle

I have always been enamored by the incredible dishes at Malai Kitchen in West Village in Uptown Dallas, but wanted to share what was probably the best part of any of the meals I have had there – the coconut pie.

I loved the pie so very much that we called Malai and asked for the recipe.  Now we are not normally a recipe loving web site, but this pie is special.  It deserves all the love and attention it can garner.  If you can bake pies, use the recipe.  If you cannot, call them and reserve a pie for your Thanksgiving table.

Did I say it was good?     Continue reading →

We Came, We Saw, We Cocktailed: A Tales Wrap Up Report

tot4by Dorothy Hernandez   photos by Fred Plunkett

Everything at this year’s Tales of the Cocktail, just like Texas, was bigger. Here’s a roundup of our week (what we can remember, anyway).

What’s hot

Tales founder Ann Tuennerman shared with us via email some of this year’s hottest trends, echoing The Standard Pour’s Brian McCullough, with whom we chatted on Wednesday.

There is a “renewed appreciation for tequila and mezcal and the craftsmen behind the product. We had a tasting event plus a few seminars in tequilas, mezcals and rare agave spirits,” she said, adding the gin and tonic is becoming more popular.       Continue reading →

Brunch At Dish

dishby Steven Doyle

Brunch is a high priority in Dallas and with so many options for the mid-day weekend activity it is important you make the right selection of restaurant, and more so, the right dish. That is why we set our sites on Dish this weekend. Chef Garreth Dickey has quietly been plating some special brunch items, and he couldn’t possibly think we wouldn’t take notice.

Dish might be more famously known for its drag brunch. The restaurant turns its tables three times during the last weekend hurray drag-fest, and it is not just the friendly gayborhood patrol in for a looksee; this brunch attracts a full range of people looking for a fabulous Sunday Funday.    Continue reading →

Midnight Ramen Redux At Ten Bells This Saturday

ramen1by Steven Doyle

Ramen is the hot new topic on the lips of local food types. It is the perfect food with house-made noodles, a rich steamy broth, meaty pork belly and hopefully a wonderful poached egg. Just a few weeks back local chef from Lucia, Justin Holt, hosted two nights of ramen at  a few Oak Cliff night spots. I just received a text from the chef saying he is pumped about another night of ramen at Ten Bells Tavern this Saturday night, March 9, 2013.   Continue reading →
