First Look: Townhouse Kitchen + Bar

by Steven Doyle

There are more than a few decent dining choices at the Dallas Galleria, including Second Floor and Oceanaire. Less than a month ago we welcomed the new Townhouse Kitchen + Bar to the landscape. The restaurant is a bit stark in its furnishings, but has a terrific patio and large bar that greets each guest as they enter.

The menu is pretty much across the board featuring most anything that might please, including steaks, seafood and tacos. Tacos? Well, ramped up tacos unlike you might have had at your local taqueria. Think Kimchi Duck or Shrimp Kung Pao.     Continue reading

Meet Chef DAT of the Soon to Open Mason Bar

by Steven Doyle

In collaboration with Brandt Wood and chef David Anthony Temple will be opening the kitchen at the Mason Bar in just a few short weeks. You may remember Temple, often referred to as Chef DAT. He is the 28-year old chef who has been honing his skills by running a successful series of underground dinners in the Dallas area. Now the DAT has gone legit.

The Mason Bar rests comfortably in its digs at 2701 Gulliot in Dallas in the State Thomas section of Dallas that just borders Uptown. There we find the interesting building which was originally a church in the 1930’s and eventually a Freemason Lodge in 1951. For seven years it was the home for artist James Sasso and the artist has promised to send out some artwork to represent that period.    Continue reading

Patrick Henry Would’ve Loved Liberty Burger

by Steven Doyle   photos by Robert Bostick

When your paterfamilias is the legendary Gene Street who brought us such restaurants as Black Eyed Pea, Good Eats and Lucky’s, you will be forever put on notice should you ever attempt to succeed in the same industry. As the rumors turned into reality the young and insightful Mariel Street succeeded as she and her siblings opened what we are sure is just the first Liberty Burger.

Far from fast food, the burger-only restaurant is splashy and delectable. When ordering your Liberty Burger it is important to realize that all the ingredients are of the fresh-n-local variety, as is the beautifully baked bun from Empire Baking Company which is the tie that binds.            Continue reading

First Look: The Chesterfield

by Steven Doyle      photos by Robert Bostick

The Chesterfield opened their doors yesterday for lunch and we sent in ace photographer, Robert Bostick for a look-see. As we mentioned before, the room is small with just space enough for about 40 seats. The ceiling is probably taller than it is wide, but behind the bar there is plenty of room for some of the city’s most amazing cocktails produced by “Lucky” Eddie Campbell.   Continue reading

Chesterfield’s Opens Today for Lunch

by Steven Doyle

We checked out the new Chesterfield’s which opens its doors today and is owned by Eddie “Lucky” Campbell and Ed Bailey (of Bailey’s Prime Plus). The small, but plush lounge is located at 1404 Main Street in downtown Dallas. The look and feel will take you back to Prohibition times. The waitresses even have a flapper-ish look about them at the new bar.

While sampling a few of the small plates offered by chef Michael Ehlert we were also able to taste some of the superb cocktails . The food we were able to try had a Middle Eastern flair and were extremely flavorful and well executed by Ehlert. Think kabobs and falafel. We were also able to sample a foie torchon, so the menu is not just simple bar fare. Early press releases mentioned flat breads and heartier dishes such as braised short ribs. Continue reading

First Look: Mr. Mesero

by Steven Doyle

Mico Rodirguez is back and blazing guns at his new restaurant, Mr. Mesero. The quaint former location of the ill-fated Burger Girl located at 4444 McKinney Avenue holds a dozen four-top tables with an additional communal table outside that seats about twelve people.

I stopped by Mesero today for a bite and found the food much different than I had imagined. There were some Tex Mex items, but the menu also had a Mex Mex aspect as well.         Continue reading

The starting bell has chimed and they’re off.  Dallas Beer Week officially begins today and there are plenty of options abound to quench your craft beer thirst.

Actually, the unofficial start was last night at the Anvil Pub with the very first commercial tapping of Deep Ellum Brewing Company’s brew, both their Backslider Blonde and a Double Brown Stout.  The boys at Deep Ellum were on hand to celebrate and there were many revelers  lined up to be the very first to sample their new product.   Continue reading
