America’s Best Bites Visits Dallas

by Steven Doyle

In the wee hours last night we spoke to the associate producer for a new television program, America’s Best Bites, which will soon air across the country and in Dallas on KDAF CW 33. The half hour program will run in most major markets and combines two of our favorite things: food and travel.

The hosts, Ted Brunson and Natalie Forte, are on a mission each week to find affordable dishes and must-eat items across America, based primarily on viewer feedback from Facebook and Twitter. The new program is to be charged with a sense of humor and audience participation. Excellent tips from viewers will be rewarded with on-air cameos and other forms of incentives.   Continue reading

Dual First Looks: Dough and Mesa Maya Part 1

by Steven Doyle

Yesterday marked the opening of two restaurants in the North Dallas burbs located mere feet from each other at the intersection of Forest and Preston. This was far too great an opportunity to pass up and since we couldn’t choose one we went to both Dough, the San Antonio based Neapolitan pizzeria and Meso Maya, the newest restaurant concept from the group that most recently took over the El Fenix.

To be honest, our intent was to check into Dough, but once there we remembered that Meso Maya was opening the same day. Both had been through a rigorous weekend of friends and family testing and were in full swing operation.   Continue reading

Benefit for Stone Family Raises over 10k

by Steven Doyle     photos by Robert Bostick

Last evening we attended the fundraiser for fallen firefighter, Lt. Shannon Stone at the Dallas Farmers Market. The event attracted over 125 people raising an estimated $10,000 for the family.

The event was the brainchild of Pecan Lodge owners Diane and Justin Fourton and Jill Grobowsky Bergus of Lockhart Smokehouse who were particularly moved by the death of Stone after he fell to his death at a Ranger game July 7, 2011. After hearing the terrible news they called on a few industry friends to create this special evening.

Make Your Own Neapolitan Pizza?

by Steven Doyle

Last evening I had a chance to catch up with a friend who was attending a cooking class and decided to join her. The class seemed a bit different than most as it was set in a private chefs home. I was told that she had installed a wood burning oven and was offering pizza-making classes.

Walking into the residence I was a bit apprehensive, but was immediately greeted by the group of women that had gathered and handed a nice glass of wine. The wine flowed freely through out the evening making the group a bit louder and certainly more soulful.

Gail Waxman owns Bubble and in her home she has one of the finest pizza ovens made by Renato which are actually created locally in Garland. Many restaurants have these ovens installed in their kitchens including Zanata in Rockwall and Plano. The Rockwall location has a bank of the ovens installed, and they are quite pricey. Chef Waxman’s oven cost her nearly 30 grand, a major investment but one she is quite happy with. She not only teaches but also entertains, and the ability to make 6 pies at once comes in handy.  Continue reading

Pizza D’oh!

by Steven Lindsey     Photos by Rod Orta

Is Dallas big enough for another authentic Neapolitan pizza restaurant? Absolutely. But in the old Chocolate Angel space at Preston and Forest that once was home to Il Cane Rosso, one of the most justifiably buzzed-about pizzerias to hit the metroplex? That’s right where San Antonio transplant Dough will soon open. Talk about déjà vu.

Tasked with the delicious assignment of doing a little pizza recon 300 miles away, I headed to the Alamo city to check out Dough mere days before owners Doug and Lisa Horn plan to open their second location. (By the way, it was reading an article in Rachael Ray’s magazine that forced me to realize the genius of the name Dough. Doug H? DougH?) Yeah, took me a minute, too. But in my defense, I was too focused on the amazing spread on my table.  Continue reading
