The Great Tomato Battle

by Christina Beard

If you had told me this time last year that I would be participating in a giant food fight and paying to do so, I would have told you that you were out of your mind. However, for some reason, when I saw the deal come up for 50% off of the inaugural Tomato Battle in Dallas, I couldn’t resist. So, Saturday afternoon, I found myself driving to Fair Park prepared for the biggest (and only) food fight in which I have ever participated.                 Continue reading

Step Up To DFW Food Challenges

by Steven Doyle

You’ve seen Adam Richman take on piles of chicken fried steaks, burgers, ghost pepper laden wings and so much more. The man is an eating machine that can’t stop. The Travel Channel star is taking his show to another level by inviting his viewers (you know you watch) to go into competition with this master of gluttony.

To get on the show Man v. Food Nation might take a little bit of P.T. Barnum know-how and the ability to shovel in your pie hole a whole lot of pie. Richman was recently in Dallas with his one man circus filming a few challenges the program created, but there are plenty of agonizing challenges in DFW without making them up for television.

Need some help with ideas on what to tackle in the DFW area? Crave came up with a few that you can enjoy after the jump:   Continue reading

Kim Jong Il Invented The Burger

by Steven Doyle

The birthplace of the modern hamburger has long been contested but one fact remains crystalline clear, we love a good burger. There have been references to the humble origins of the hamburger racing back as far asthe 15th century, with more modern references in 18th century German seaports that served a faint resemblance to the dish. This seems the most credible explaination to the name and thought to have spread to the states via sailors seeking an inexpensive, warm meal.

From Europe we then see mentions of the hamburger on menus in New York, specifically Delmonico’s in 1826. If this is true, why such a controversy over who invented the burger?

Texas historian and chili god Frank X Tolbert gave the honor of inventing the burger to an Athens, Texas café, while the Dallas Morning News attributes the burger to Tulsa.  Continue reading

Groen-ing, the New Planking

by Steven Doyle                                                                                                                       photo by Robert Bostick

Internet driven trends, or memes, have been sweeping the world in viral proportions and it nearly takes a handbook to keep up with such unusual antics as planking, owling and batting. It doesn’t take long to flip through your Facebook stream to find one or more of these unusual poses on someone’s wall. It’s a trend that even the most awkward can master merely with the use of a camera phone and a willing subject.

With that said we have sought out even more unusual memes, because posing as an owl is fast becoming a dated fad.

Enter a few of these actual memes such as pillaring, which is the act of standing up-right and still. Be cautioned that death and injuries have been reported surrounding pillaring incidents. Go figure.  Continue reading

by Steven Doyle

An interesting exhibition is now on display that chronicles food and nutrition for the past 100 years. The National Archives announced recently What’s Cooking, Uncle Sam? would make its run through January 2, 2012 in Washington.

The exhibition is curated by Alice Kamps who was the former Director of Interpretation at Hillwood Museum and Gardens and Director of Arts Learning at Chicago Children’s Museum has gathered an interesting display from within the belly of the government that doesn’t always portray Uncle Sam in the best light.   Continue reading
