Kenny Visits Ruth’s Chris For A Cocktail Dinner

KK_23_2013_08_Ruth_Cris-9by Kenny Kuczwaj

Recently I was an invited guest at a Ruth’s Chris cocktail dinner. I get to go to a lot of these type dinners, mostly wine pairings with some decent food pairings. Going to a craft cocktail pairings with different foods seemed like fun since even I  “the number one rated wine czar” gets tired of the grape juice . I also have been asking all the great bartenders who come on the Crave Radio show what food would you match these often fabulous cocktails they create. The answers are often all over the map but they seem to make sense.   Continue reading

We Came, We Saw, We Cocktailed: A Tales Wrap Up Report

tot4by Dorothy Hernandez   photos by Fred Plunkett

Everything at this year’s Tales of the Cocktail, just like Texas, was bigger. Here’s a roundup of our week (what we can remember, anyway).

What’s hot

Tales founder Ann Tuennerman shared with us via email some of this year’s hottest trends, echoing The Standard Pour’s Brian McCullough, with whom we chatted on Wednesday.

There is a “renewed appreciation for tequila and mezcal and the craftsmen behind the product. We had a tasting event plus a few seminars in tequilas, mezcals and rare agave spirits,” she said, adding the gin and tonic is becoming more popular.       Continue reading

Check Out The New Cocktail Menu At Quarter Bar

travis6by Travis Baugh

The Quarter Bar in Uptown on McKinney has a classy atmosphere but still retains a casual feel. Inspired by the owners love for French Quarter of New Orleans, this massive bar is filled with antique couches and lamp shades, restored tables and chandeliers. The walls are lined with old paintings and memories of nights past. Every room in The Quarter inspires feelings of the decadent  saloons of New Orleans in the 19th century with a red felt pool table up stairs and an enclosed patio downstairs, while still being modern with giant connect four and touch screen juke boxes. Even the new cocktail list is reminiscent of New Orleans’s; from the Voodoo Queen to bar manager Stacy Taylor’s favorite the Frozen Cherry Limeade, all the new cocktails are great for summer.     Continue reading

Tales of the Cocktail Veteran

IMG_7388by Dorothy Hernandez

Bonnie Wilson had a busy week in New Orleans for Tales of the Cocktail. The bartender from The Ranch at Las Colinas in Irving arrived last Monday, prepped for the Texas Tailgate on Tuesday, competed in the 21 Cocktail Salute on Thursday and served up drinks with a healthy twist (think spinach, beets, cucumber and booze) at the VeeV Fresh Market outside Hotel Monteleone in the hot sun on Saturday.

With such seminars as Agave Amigos at the festival this year, the three-time Tales veteran backed up the idea that agave is having its moment. As a spirit, it’s blown up in the past couple of years.   Continue reading

Kyle Hilla Has A Ball With New Bolsa Cocktail Menu

DSC08811by Steven Doyle

It is like when Navin Johnson first discovers that he is somebody and gleefully announces that the new phone book arrived. I know that feeling all too well when a barman with the talents of Bolsa barman Kyle Hilla jets out the fact he has some new summer cocktails on his menu. It just seemed like weeks ago we were celebrating springtime menus, but we accept any reason to enjoy freshly squeezed juices, blended with the hottest liquors and molded into a frosty glass to take the edge off the smoldering heat in July.      Continue reading

The Establishment’s Adjoining Reservation Bar Opens This Week

DSC06082by Steven Doyle

Look for the new reservation bar that is attached to the space that will soon become the Establishment to open this week. Brian Williams and Michael Martensen both hosted a sneak preview for friends and family this past Friday evening, and we were able to get a glimpse of the bar.

Currently the bar has no name and Martensen said they are still tweaking the logo. Rumor has it that the space might be named Bar Smyth, but that could change.     Continue reading
