Eddie “Lucky” Campbell At Abacus

DSC09000by Steven Doyle

You know Lucky Campbell, one of our favorite Dallas bartenders. He was the mad man behind Chesterfield’s in downtown Dallas, and most recently behind the stick at Standard Pour where he was a constant fixture for those in need of a curiously delicious cocktail.

Last week Lucky went all MIA on us, and didn’t leave a forwarding address. Well, we found him, and this time he is at Abacus working with Kent Rathbun. Look at Lucky, getting all refined on us. We wish him the very best.

Rathbun Bros. On Chopped August 11

kentby Steven Doyle

When Chef Kent Rathbun was on our radio program a few weeks ago he mentioned that there would be some Rathbun’s on Chopped very soon and to keep an eye out for that. We just received notice that not only was he on Chopped, but he appeared once again with his brother Kevin Rathbun. You probably remember when this family force was together on the Food Network last time. They kicked Bobby Flay’s butt on Iron Chef. Kent also told us some fun stories about that on our program as well.   Continue reading

A Gran Patron Dinner At Abacus

patron1by Steven Doyle

Last evening Kent Rathbun held one of his famous dinners, this time surrounded by the people from Patron who offered some amazing pairings with Rathbun’s surprisingly unusual food. Walking  into the restaurant I was thinking ‘Mexican’ to match up to Patron Tequila, and that would certainly work for Abacus which serves up world cuisine. But instead of just going to the immediate south of the border, we were treated to full-on pan-Latin cuisine, which took elements from Spain, South America and yes, Mexico.          Continue reading

craveRADIO: June 21, 2013

radio2by Steven Doyle  photos by Robert Bostick

Last week on craveRADIO we had chef Kent Rathbun in the studio to talk about his various restaurants including his flagship Abacus, Jasper’s and Rathbun’s Blue Plate which is located in Preston Center. The chef said he is currently looking for real estate to place another Jasper’s in North Dallas, which would certainly make a welcome addition to any neighborhood.

We also got a behind the scenes look at Iron Chef, and Rathbun discussed his victory over Bobby Flay. He mentioned that there may be a Rathbun on an upcoming Chopped on the Food Network (go, Kevin!)

We hope to have Kent back in the studio very soon as he had to dash off to a cooking class at Abacus. He actually slipped out in the middle of his Dirty Dozen class to pop by for this visit, and we certainly thank him for that.         Continue reading

Comparative Wine Dinner Inaugurates KB’S Event Venue For Kent Rathbun Catering

IMG_1604by Andrew Chalk

Kent Rathbun has moved his catering operations to Plano and turned the space that used to be Zea Woodfire Grill into an event venue. The space was christened, after a fashion, last week with an extensive dinner pairing four courses by catering chef Jeff Qualls and wines from Constellation Brands presented by Constellation representative Todd Ruback. I was an invited guest at the event.           Continue reading

Close Encounters of The Gastronomic Kind

wine poste2by Andrew Chalk

For reasons we don’t fully understand, Dallas is packed with interesting wine and food events in the next three weeks. Things could be worse. We could all be on the ‘Pyongyang Diet’. Here is a summary of some of the most interesting press releases that came across my (virtual) desk:   Continue reading
