Lulu Modern Chinese Brings a Big-City Edge to Plano

At Lulu Modern Chinese, the room hits you first. A long bar runs the length of the space, stacked floor to ceiling with bottles and softly backlit like a display case, with three large TVs above it. It feels polished without feeling stiff. You can sit there and not feel pushed out.

The dining room opens up from there with curved banquettes, marble tables, and a ceiling full of geometric panels and hanging lights that give the space some movement. Booths line the windows, while the center of the room carries a little more energy. It’s modern and clearly thought through, but not overdesigned.

Duck & Dumpling: A Comfort-Driven Celebration of Duck

In North Texas, some of the most compelling Chinese restaurants are just outside Dallas proper, where chefs are afforded both space and a loyal, food-curious audience. Duck & Dumpling, located along Plano’s Central Expressway corridor, fits squarely into that tradition. The restaurant was conceived around two deceptively simple ideas—duck done well and dumplings made by hand—and has quietly built a reputation by executing both with care, restraint, and consistency.

Duck & Dumpling leans into classical Chinese comfort cooking, allowing technique, broth, and texture to do the heavy lifting. The result is a menu that feels thoughtful and deeply satisfying, particularly for diners who value warmth and craftsmanship over spectacle.

Zhang’s Kitchen in Plano for Peking Duck

Zhang’s Kitchen in Plano is a quiet powerhouse, operating with precision in a modest strip mall off Coit. The Peking duck is the centerpiece—no pretense, no ceremony, just a perfectly executed plate delivered with total confidence. The whole duck arrives sliced and arranged on one platter. The skin is deeply burnished, crisp without flaking apart, clinging to a thin layer of fat that dissolves as you chew. The meat is tender, deeply seasoned, and still moist, not hacked to oblivion like lesser versions. There’s no separation of stages—just a complete duck presentation that lets you assemble each pancake how you like, balancing rich slices with cucumber, scallion, and a dark, glossy hoisin that’s more earthy than sweet. It’s straightforward, tight, and deeply satisfying.

Both dishes were iconic and had patrons ordering the dishes days in advance to ensure their portion. The duck was simply that good. Check out our write-up here.

The Best Peking Duck in Dallas

peking1by Steven Doyle

Peking Duck is one of life’s greatest dining pleasures. Made properly the duck is a long process where short cuts will create more of a disaster than a delectable dish. Mr Wok in Plano understands a good Peking Duck and requires a reservation to order one.

The duck arrives golden, crispy and juicy. The fat has been rendered leaving moistened meat that is carved table-side. The meat is removed from the carcass, the skin removed from the meat. The presentation is quite breathtaking.  Continue reading
