craveRADIO: June 21, 2013

Last week on craveRADIO we had chef Kent Rathbun in the studio to talk about his various restaurants including his flagship Abacus, Jasper’s and Rathbun’s Blue Plate which is located in Preston Center. The chef said he is currently looking for real estate to place another Jasper’s in North Dallas, which would certainly make a welcome addition to any neighborhood.

We also got a behind the scenes look at Iron Chef, and Rathbun discussed his victory over Bobby Flay. He mentioned that there may be a Rathbun on an upcoming Chopped on the Food Network (go, Kevin!)

We hope to have Kent back in the studio very soon as he had to dash off to a cooking class at Abacus. He actually slipped out in the middle of his Dirty Dozen class to pop by for this visit, and we certainly thank him for that. Continue reading →

Bare Knuckle Madness At Tales Of The Cocktail

If the hour-plus wait and getting shut down by the cops are any indication, the Bare Knuckles bar fight at the Jax Brewery was one of the hottest parties of Tales of the Cocktail Friday night in the Big Easy—and Texas was there to represent.

Since we couldn’t get in, we caught up with 86 Co.’s and Texas’ own Jason Kosmas the day after to get the scoop on the party where Bar Smyth was among the teams battling for fancy drinks supremacy and global domination, well at least bar domination. Continue reading →

Tales of the Cocktail Veteran

Bonnie Wilson had a busy week in New Orleans for Tales of the Cocktail. The bartender from The Ranch at Las Colinas in Irving arrived last Monday, prepped for the Texas Tailgate on Tuesday, competed in the 21 Cocktail Salute on Thursday and served up drinks with a healthy twist (think spinach, beets, cucumber and booze) at the VeeV Fresh Market outside Hotel Monteleone in the hot sun on Saturday.

With such seminars as Agave Amigos at the festival this year, the three-time Tales veteran backed up the idea that agave is having its moment. As a spirit, it’s blown up in the past couple of years. Continue reading →

Cook Hall and Four Corners Brewing Co

Cook Hall, the gastropub at the W Hotel in Dallas, held their second beer dinner last week. Four Corners Brewing Company was the showcased brewery and I was fortunate to be an invited media guest.

You could almost hand-deliver Four Corners beers to Cook hall. The brewery is at Trinity Groves on the west end of Santiago Calatrava’s glorious bridge over the Trinity River. Continue reading →

What I am Drinking Now — Is In Whole Foods, Addison

If you really want to laugh at my palate, or lack thereof, there has never been a better time. Whole Foods Addison (the new one that does not yet have Whole Parking Lot) is sticking my recommendation by bottles of wine using a selling device called ‘shelf talkers’. That means a short paragraph describing the wine and what I think commends it to you. I submitted about eight recommendations but only saw three there last weekend. The Gruet sparkling wine from New Mexico is a bargain summer sparkler. Continue reading →

Dear Whole Foods Market, Please Remove Non-Texas Wine From Your Texas Wine Display

Walking around the new Whole Foods Market in Addison this weekend I came across a whole pallet of Texas wines. Or so it seemed. One of them was the wine below. It is the Dry Comal Creek Vineyard ‘Comal Red XI’ Red Wine. The front label points out that the winery is in New Braunfels, so you might think that this is a Texas wine. On the bottom right of the label is a star decal which says ‘featuring Texas-Style wines’. That also appears to indicate that this is a Texas wine. Continue reading →
