We Came, We Saw, We Cocktailed: A Tales Wrap Up Report

tot4by Dorothy Hernandez   photos by Fred Plunkett

Everything at this year’s Tales of the Cocktail, just like Texas, was bigger. Here’s a roundup of our week (what we can remember, anyway).

What’s hot

Tales founder Ann Tuennerman shared with us via email some of this year’s hottest trends, echoing The Standard Pour’s Brian McCullough, with whom we chatted on Wednesday.

There is a “renewed appreciation for tequila and mezcal and the craftsmen behind the product. We had a tasting event plus a few seminars in tequilas, mezcals and rare agave spirits,” she said, adding the gin and tonic is becoming more popular.       Continue reading

Best Places In DFW To Hide From The Sharknado!

vd-sharknado-408x264

by Nicholas Bostick

Not since the great flood of Noah’s day has nature expressed its wrath towards man with such poetic force as, Sharknado. We here in Dallas may think we’re safe, what with our lack of surf-able oceans and sun soaked beaches. Experts however, disagree.  Channel 8 meteorologist Pete Delkus tweeted his concern for our collective doom, and he’s on TV. Every. Day. Continue reading

Try TJ’s Seafood At Veritas

Maine-lobsterby Steven Doyle

If you are a regular reader of craveDFW you know that we are super fans of TJ’s Seafood Market located on Preston at Forest Lane, and the new location on  Oak Lawn Across from Al Biernat’s restaurant. The reason is simple, the proprietor Jon Alexis flies his seafood in every day, all day. He buys in quantities that sell quickly so nothing remains each day. We liked our beef aged, but not our snapper.

Alexis has teamed up with the boys at Veritas Wine Room  (located on Henderson in Dallas) the third Sunday of each month to provide a lobster bake that includes a whole lobster,   potatoes, corn, clams, mussels, sausage, etc. for $30. That shindig starts at 5:30 on the third Sunday of each month. There are plenty f great beers or wines t pair this dinner up with, so don’t miss that.  But wait, there is a mega dinner planned or this weekend… Continue reading

Genaro’s Opening In East Dallas

genaroby Steven Doyle

Long time Dallas restaurateur will be opening another concept late August or early September of 2013. Chef Genaro Silva plans to open Genaro’s at 6465 East Mockingbird, and it will be what he calls elevated Mexican cuisine. You know Silva from such restaurants as Genaro’s Tropical, Moctezuma’s, Garmo’s

Genaro Silva said, “I have always wanted to project Latin-based cuisine in a distinguished and cool environment and always present our cuisine in a top-notch, first-class way. It is my life’s passion ever since I started following the Galloping Gourmet when I was a teenager. I derive enjoyment from helping others have a good time. I want to create a Mexican food experience where the customer feels catered to and gets the benefit of a full-service approach”.   Continue reading

Check Out The New Cocktail Menu At Quarter Bar

travis6by Travis Baugh

The Quarter Bar in Uptown on McKinney has a classy atmosphere but still retains a casual feel. Inspired by the owners love for French Quarter of New Orleans, this massive bar is filled with antique couches and lamp shades, restored tables and chandeliers. The walls are lined with old paintings and memories of nights past. Every room in The Quarter inspires feelings of the decadent  saloons of New Orleans in the 19th century with a red felt pool table up stairs and an enclosed patio downstairs, while still being modern with giant connect four and touch screen juke boxes. Even the new cocktail list is reminiscent of New Orleans’s; from the Voodoo Queen to bar manager Stacy Taylor’s favorite the Frozen Cherry Limeade, all the new cocktails are great for summer.     Continue reading

The Generous Pour Is a Great Way to Learn About Wine

generous2by Andrew Chalk

If you have an interest in wine and asked yourself “What do the main grape types taste like?” I have a recommendation for you. Slip down to The Capital Grille in Dallas, Fort Worth or Plano and take part in The Generous Pour. It is essentially a matching flight of wines to go with the food you choose from the menu. However, it is cleverly chosen to be both informative and unpretentious to newcomers to wine. There are seven wines in total, divided into a flight of three whites and one of four reds. You start with the whites. Your waiter or waitress gives you a good-sized taste of each wine. If you want more of one that you especially like they are easygoing about that.        Continue reading
