Driftwood’s Fall Menu Is No Fish Tale

driftwoodby Melissa Robert

The temperatures are dropping and coats are finally being donned in Dallas, which can only mean one thing, Fall menus are upon us. Lucky North Texas diners are seeing new plates surface at their favorite eateries across the Metroplex. I had the pleasure of sharing a meal with colleagues Tuesday night at Driftwood near the Bishop Arts area of Oak Cliff. If you didn’t know why they created the DLink bus before, the seafood cuisine at Driftwood will leave no doubt in your mind that they are a fixture in the destination dining landscape.

With right around fifty seats, the dining room is intimate, and even on a Tuesday evening the patrons are plentiful and energetic. The outdoor space accommodates an additional twenty guests and features a fireplace as well as a second side to the main bar which is fully exposed when the accordion-style glass is folded back. While at the bar, inside or out, order a cocktail off the Fall drink menu. Behind the bar, Michael will whip up a Holy Grail with fresh cranberries and chai that will quench your liquid holiday needs. Also, look for a new bar bites menu to be available in the next week or two.    Continue reading →

Meat Fight Rescue

ronby Steven Doyle

Meat Fight is upon us, and it would seem every decent barbecue  Generalísimo will be either working or judging the event. You know you didn’t get a ticket, we didn’t either. It is a fantastic event that started as a small backyard brouhaha to raise a few bucks for National MS Society by the Observer James Beard award winning writer and former Cheap Bastard, Alice Laussade. Last year the event came out of the closet and was opened to the public with rave reviews, including one from craveDFW.

My ticket last year fell onto my lap after a friend could not make the event. I was driving back into town from the Terlingua Chili Cookoff when the offer was made. I floored the gas pedal and made it back in time for the closing credits of the event but was still able to sample a few slices of brisket and a chunk of sausage made by Brian Luscher. I ate the flesh and it was good.

For those who were not fortunate enough to secure a ticket during the three minutes they were for sale, we have a few meat suggestions of our own. Laussade mentioned a few weeks back that if this event was as successful as she hopes (and it is already) that next year will be much larger and more inclusive.  Peruse our meat laden list below, and if you use any of the following ideas to pass the time your luckier friends are at Meat Fight, consider making a donation to the National MS Society. Karma will assist you next year.    Continue reading →

Going Underground With Chef DAT

DSC08923

by Steven Doyle

On occasion we chat about the underground dinner scene in Dallas which has maintained steady strength regardless of the new restaurants that have been opening in Dallas. People enjoy that secretive aspect to the dinners, and all the joy of camaraderie associated with these special evenings. The premise is simple. Be lucky enough to know about the event, and sometimes we give the hosts of the events a special shout out on craveDFW. The dinners are almost always BYOB which gives the diners control over their pairings. The chef often reveals the menu in advance and also suggests wines.  This can be extremely interesting.

This past weekend we attended one of Chef DAT’s dinners, and were extremely excited due to the special menu  plans he laid out for us. DAT is the undisputed king of the underground and has many of these special events at various spots around the city. He has been known to take his kitchen show on the road to enviable locations such as Napa Valley, New Orleans and even Hawaii.  This particular dinner included some fun ingredients such as White Alba Tuffles, Amber Osetra Caviar, lobster and rainbow trout procured from TJ’s Seafood Market.    Continue reading →

The Glenlivet 18 and 21 Year With a Side of Cheese

glen1by James Davidson

The Glenlivet Guardians teamed up with Paula Lambert, owner of Mozzarella Company to host a Scotch and Cheese pairing event at Photographs Do Not Bend Gallery(PDNB).  The expressions The Glenlivet focused on were the 18 and 21 year.  The Glenlivet Guardians is the club you join if you want to receive news on The Glenlivet and get information about events like this one.

After the lovely wife and I checked in, we headed over to the bar to get a dram of The Glenlivet 18 year old.  The 18 year old Scotch spends about 18 years in ex-bourbon barrels with the last 6-ish months in sherry casks.  With a darker amber then some Scotches, the dram gave off aromas of flowers and sweetness.  At first, fruity and rich notes tantalize the taste buds, then floral notes start to blossom and last into the finish.  Spicy notes end the finish and stick with you for a minute or so after swallowing.    Continue reading →

Brewvolution Showcases Texas’s Most Loved Breweries

beer3by Melissa Robert

Saturday kicked off the third annual North Texas Beer Week with its commencement event, Brewvolution. Centennial Hall, the 95,000 square foot venue in Fair Park, was filled with beer-lovers young and old – all legal drinking age of course. Event-goers were greeted at the door with the 2013 Treasure Map which did indeed mark the spot where the favorite brews could be found. Those in the know arrived early, adorned with pretzel necklaces and silly hats only a beer-lovers mother could love. The organizers of Untapped Festival and Big Texas Beer Fest teamed up to ensure this ale extravaganza would go off without a hitch.

While the most popular taps ran dry as the hours passed, food trucks and vendors on site kept bellies full. Live music from local bands such as the Roomsounds and Hanna Barbarians provided another element of fun which guests could enjoy while letting their beer and brats settle. Sampling cup-holder necklaces from Oskar Blues were a hit. I’ll definitely come equipped with a cup holding necklace contraption next year since holding my sample cup, tasting card and nibbling on my pretzel necklace all at the same time proved entirely too difficult.   Continue reading →

Rahr and Sons Visionary 2013

Visionary-Labelby Brian Wall

So, how many of you out there enjoy a good IPA?  The scent of hops, with a fruity or citrusy or piney bouquet that seeps into every aspect of the nose. The flavor that ranges in the same scale of citrus, fruit, pine or even mango. Weird thing is that the strain of hop and when it is added during the cooking process of the beer is how the scent, flavor or bitterness is accentuated in the beer. A good IPA is pretty much the staple of the typical hophead.

When one brings up the Double or Imperial IPA, it can make a hophead become a kid around Christmastime. “I want” or “I need” is the most common thought that crosses a hophead’s mind when it comes to a limited edition Imperial IPA.    Continue reading →
