Service Industry Night At Boulevardier Celebrates Your Night Off

boul1by Steven Doyle    photos by Robert Bostick

I know many industry folk read craveDFW and I truly appreciate the support. This is why I am passing along a tip that should make most of you happy. There are many restaurants and bars around town that provide for an industry night. This is where anyone working in the restaurant industry receives special consideration, usually in the form of a discount for drinks or food. Restaurants love to see the industry file in because they are gracious guests, spend plenty of cash and tip very well. It is a perfect win for these establishments on a slow evening.   Continue reading

Sunset Lounge In Full On Tiki Swing

DSC05217by Steven Doyle

The Sunset Lounge is now humming along at peak performance. We stopped in for a few cocktails during the grand opening Wednesday evening where everything was $3 making for a rather light bar tab even with a few food items thrown in for good measure. Sad you missed that deal? Fret not my fellow bar hound, everything is $3 during happy hour each day, so enjoy that if you will.

The cocktails are magnificent. Many are throw backs to your father’s generation where they sipped large and in charge cocktails that were stuffed with giant rasps of fruit and cute umbrellas. I love a good retro drink, and the zombie is well worth the order. Cautionary tale: you are only allowed two of these babies and they are deceivingly delicious and full of 151 proof rum.      Continue reading

Celebrate The Repeal Of Prohibition Dec 5

prohibitionby Steven Doyle

October 28, 1919 a bill was introduced and vetoed the same day by president Woodrow Wilson. The Volstead Act would criminalize intoxicating beverages containing over .05% alcohol. Not content with the veto the House and Senate over-rode the veto and the Prohibition Era was born.

The Volstead Act gave birth to speakeasies, bath tub gin and gangland violence in what would be recorded as one of the worst social experiments of our time. On December 5, 1933, Utah became the 36th state to ratify the Twenty-first Amendment, which repealed the Eighteenth Amendment, rendered the Volstead Act unconstitutional, and restored control of alcohol to the states.          Continue reading

Rest In Peace, Keith

by Steven Doyle

I was to report some news this morning from a local barman and friend, Keith LaBonte, owner of Four Lounge.  I was to discuss the expansion of the State and Allen bar expanding, but instead of the happy news I am now to report that Keith has passed away.

Keith Thomas LaBonte was passionate about his work as the quirky bar owner who made such notorious concoctions as his cotton candy martini that was laced with champagne.   Continue reading
