Our Favorite Pescaderia: Mambo Seafood

by Steven Doyle

Mambo Seafood opened on Northwest Highway just a few years back, and is located across the street from Pappas BBQ. For those unfamiliar with the Texas based casual dining chain, they are originally located in the Houston area and have since spread to other areas across Texas. You will typically find the restaurant nestled into primarily Hispanic neighborhoods as this seems to be their target market.  As any Texan who is grocery savvy knows, this does not preclude anyone from joining in the fiesta.        Continue reading

Pollo Regio Much Anyone?

DSC04230by Steven Doyle

When a fast food chain opens up we generally do not give notice, or care for that matter. But Pollo Regio has been invading Dallas, with plenty more on their way, and they deserve at the very least a golf clap. The restaurant is quick, tasty and for many – nearby.

Regio started its restaurant out of something similar to a food truck in Austin, selling a delicious pollo asado that is marinated then grilled for a pretty exquisite flavor. The basics of charro beans, rice and grilled onions gives this Regio a simplistic menu that is hard to beat. The chicken is served with a pack of corn tortillas which makes each meal a feast.   Continue reading

Rare White Cacao Available In Dallas Area

by Steven Doyle

Dan Pearson stumbled upon an unusual tree while working in Peru supplying miners with food. Pearson didn’t know it at the time, but what he found was the legendary white cacao bean called Pure Nacional. The bean lacks the typical bitterness found in most strains of the bean, and has an intense floral flavor.      Continue reading

Turkish Cafe Pera

by Steven Doyle

I stopped into Pera for the luncheon special. Pera is a Turkish restaurant located on Preston Road in Far North Dallas and is the sister restaurant to Istanbul Grill in Arlington owned by Sam Sensel and his brother Habbib. The brothers are from a coastal city in Turkey where they enjoyed a fantastic Mediterranean view and will speak of it fondly by the mere mention.    Continue reading

A Trip To Square Burger In McKinney

by Steven Doyle

What do you do with a chef who graduated from the California Culinary Academy, worked at Spago, Abacus, Five Sixty and numerous other spots of similar caliber? Some might say have the chef move to McKinney and open a café that sells  great burgers and beer. That is the case with chef Craig Brundege who operates Square Burger in McKinney.

Square Burger has been running strong for over four years offering their power-house line up of great burgers and daily specials that will often include fresh fish and pastas. But what drives us 30 miles up I75 to downtown McKinney from the inner-workings of Dallas are those haunting burgers.   Continue reading

Eat This: Texas Bobwhite Quail at Clark

quail

by Andrew Chalk

I thought Dean Fearing had a lock on the consumate preparation of Texas’ favorite game bird, bobwhite quail. However, funky Greenville Avenue American bistro Clark Food and Wine Co. is going to give him a run for the money. These birds are delicately grilled with ample seasoning and sever obediently when cut with a knife, although I recommend picking the leg up and sucking off every last meaty morsel. Continue reading
