Food and Fundraising on Wheels: Thanking DFW Food Trucks

by Lily Watson

Food trucks have been popping up across the U.S. for the past few years, and Dallas and Fort Worth have been lucky enough to be a major part of that movement. I love going over to the Dallas Arts District for food truck lunch on Friday for some street tacos, a sweet snack and an extra side of Vitman D as I soak up the sun at my picnic table.

My first day at the Red Cross I toured our facilities and was introduced to our Emergency Response Vehicles (ERVs for short). These trucks go out to major home fires or communities affected by disaster distributing beverages, snacks and even hot meals to victims and relief workers. I remember the eyebrows raising on my tour guide as I delightfully exclaimed, “Wow! Who knew the Red Cross had our very own line of food trucks?!” Read more at Red Alert

Why Wine Took Me To A Motel Off I-20 In Shreveport

by David Donalson

Shreveport is known as Dallas’ little Vegas, full of craps tables and ante-free blackjack, but no one goes to Shreveport thinking they are going to get the full Vegas treatment. I may now have a solution for you. While I cannot magically make Cirque du Soleil appear at the Horseshoe, I can now tell you where to go to dinner to impress… a little motel off I-20 and Diamondjacks.    Continue reading →

McCallister Pies It Up

by Steven Doyle

Last night as part of the visiting celebrity chef series at Cane Rosso, Matt McCallister stormed the Deep Ellum Neapolitan pizzeria with a few surprises.  If you have been following the Cane Rosso files for the past year you would understand that owner Jay Jerrier is unforgiving with two specific pizza ingredients. Specifically, ranch dressing and pineapple.

Knowing this, McCallister with his bright sense of humor decided to make two varieties of pies. One would contain pineapple.       Continue reading →

Market Report: Shed Two Expansions

by Steven Doyle

It is always a good thing to take a stroll through Shed Two at the Dallas Farmers Market. You never know what you might encounter in the building that hosts many prepared foods. This past weekend proves that point well.

At first glance you will find that Natsumi has taken leave, so you are no longer able to sample their fine gelatos. However we learned that Ruth Ann and Bill Glover who operate Fudgemakers, also located in Shed Two, purchased the Natsumi equipment and will be taking a class in New York to learn the finer points of gelato making. They have already begun their build out next to their current business and will soon add gelato to their line up of sweets.       Continue reading →

Going Local at Bolsa Mercado

by Steven Doyle

This weekend we took a stroll into the fairly new Bolsa Mercado top check out some of the local products they are moving at break-neck speeds. We ran into on of the owners, Chris Zielke and he showed us around a bit. You will recognize the name from his other Bolsa, the restaurant, just a few doors down the street.

“This is so much different than running the restaurant. I come in on a Monday morning and the shelves are bare, and I have to start all over again,” said Zielke.                Continue reading →

Tony Bandiera, owner of 10-store Dallas retail chain Sigel’s, has elected not to accept the recent takeover offer from fellow Texas retailer Spec’s Wines, Spirits & Finer Foods. by Steven Doyle     photos by Robert Bostick

As we all contemplate our vows for the new year many of us are looking to drop at least a few pounds. So for at least the next few weeks we will actually use the new gym membership, cut back on whatever it is we need to cut back on, and possibly look to a diet plan that might make the whole process simpler.
