Meatballs On A Roll

by Judy Chamberlain               photos by Carsten Howitz

I had some wonderful homemade meatballs between two hunks of bread at Kenny’s Italian Kitchen in Addison several weeks ago and have not been able to top them yet, although I have tried and am still trying.

I take meatballs on bread very seriously, and have been disappointed for years encountering various incarnations of frozen meatballs out of a package in lots of places that should be serving something better. Oh, and most of these places call the thing a “sub,” or a “sandwich.”               Continue reading

Pizza Gratis, Por Favor

by Steven Doyle

The geniuses behind Pizza Patron, a Dallas based chain with locations strategically placed in predominately Hispanic neighborhoods, are back in the news again. Just a few short years ago the 20-year old restaurant chain made headlines when they began accepting pesos as currency for their products. Pizza Patron’s slogan has always been Más Pizza. Menos Dinero.   Continue reading

Nickel & Nickel Wines Pair Well With Del Frisco

by Steven Doyle

Attending a winemaker dinner has several layers of opportunity for the average food and wine enthusiast. First, you generally meet an educated winemaker or vineyard owner. This is a special opportunity to chat one on one and feel the passion behind the wines you select. These winemakers can also give hints on upcoming wine lots that may be limited and other advice on wines they enjoy through their extensive travels. This was certainly the case last evening as Del Frisco’s in Fort Worth hosted Andrew Delos, winemaker from Nickel and Nickel out of Napa Valley.

The most interesting point of Nickel and Nickel is that their wines are not blended but instead dedicated exclusively to producing 100 percent varietal, single-vineyard wines that best express the distinct personality of each vineyard. This gives you a tour of Napa Valley through the series of those single vineyards.   Continue reading

Meet Cowtown Chow Down Food Truck Park Owner Charlie Flores

by Steven Doyle

Food trucks hit the streets of DFW last year in a major way. Perhaps North Texas was a bit behind but what we lacked in timeliness we are making up for in quantity. I say North Texas, but Fort Worth has truly embraced the idea that you can lease a truck and run it around town having fans follow you for the latest in burgers, pizza and tacos. Fort Worth is also big on the food truck parks. Lets check that score: Fort Worth two, Dallas zero.         Continue reading

Where The OldWest Cafe Begins

by Ellen Ritscher Sackett

It’s just after 6 a.m., and the door has just opened at the OldWest Café in Sanger, Texas. Already three white pick-up trucks are parked in front with customers awaiting breakfast. This is a typical morning for the owners. Mark is hidden behind the scenes in the kitchen, and Carolyn, his wife, is starting her day in Denton at their sister restaurant by the same name.

The wait staff is ready. The coffee flows first, and the orders are taken. More customers dribble in, young and old, and soon the place is filled with the clatter of plates and the chatter of conversation. Some come in jeans, others in cam-o, all hungry, all anticipating what will likely be their best and biggest meal of the day. One can only hope.        Continue reading

Chefs For Farmers 2012: Success

by Steven Doyle    photos by Robert Bostick

As the day began the warm sun was breaking through the clouds greeting each visitor to Lee Park for the 2012 Chefs for Farmers “Mixin It Up On The BLVD” event held this past Sunday. I stood with Iris McCallister as bartender phenom Eddie “Lucky” Campbell took the stage to toast the growing crowd at 11:30am. The official toast would be much later in the day, but this one was to thank the many, many farmers, chefs and volunteers that made the event possible. Iris grinned and you could see she was visibly excited and pointed up to the sky where a wispy vertical rainbow had appeared.  This was going to be a fantastic day.    Continue reading

Penfolds Wine Dinner At Ruth’s Chris Steak House

by Judy Chamberlian

I was invited to experience the US and World release of the new vintage Grange wine at Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Dallas as the famed eatery put on a spectacular five course food and wine pairing show featuring the wines of Penfolds and the culinary artistry of Executive Chef Charles Miller.

As we all know, everything is big in Texas, and the steaks at Ruth’s Chris might well have been invented to suit that phrase. Actually, the restaurant chain – now one of the largest and most successful inAmerica– got its start in New Orleans in 1965 when founder Ruth Fertel mortgaged her house to buy an existing local eatery, Chris Steak House. The deal specified that the word “Chris” could never be dropped, so Ruth added her name and – though she is said to have hated the cumbersome moniker – went on to earn a place in history as a steakhouse pioneer. Today, the restaurant empire she founded numbers more than 100 locations worldwide.       Continue reading
