Celebrate Cinco de Mayo 2012 in Dallas

by Steven Doyle

For most it is not a matter if, but where to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. The origins of the holiday hardly has roots in copious amounts of margaritas and cheap Mexican beer, but instead considered the turning point in what was until then a losing fight against the powerful invading French forces.  The “Battle of Puebla” gave the Mexican people a renewed sense of hope in defending their beloved country and the eventual victory on May 5, 1862.

I suppose anytime you defeat invading French forces is a fantastic time to take a nip of tequila and should be celebrated in style. We assembled a few ways to pay your respects to Mexico and still possibly get your drink on at the same time.       Continue reading

by Jon Alexis          photos by Robert Bostick

Texans – we can slow smoke a brisket to perfection. Why are we still scared of cooking seafood at home?  Take it from someone who isn’t a chef: Fish is easy. But shellfish? Even easier.

So I jumped at the opportunity to partner with Yolanda Banks for a shellfish cooking class in her series of “Fresh is Fabulous” cooking classes at DUO All Things Culinary.   Continue reading

by Steven Doyle

Donuts might not be the most politically correct food that you might choose, but when did that ever stop us. Seriously, donuts filled with imagination as well as plenty of bacon, Cap’n Crunch or jalapenos cannot be wrong and Hypnotic Donuts hit’s the spot.

When you meet donut mogul and owner James St. Peter you can’t help but sport a smile. This man is seriously the Willy Wonka of fried dough and seems to meet each day with verve which is spoon-fed by his artistry. This leaves his customers in total fascination. St. Peter’s product is total comfort food at its finest.     Continue reading

First Look: Carbone’s

by Steven Doyle

Yesterday Julian Barsotti opened his latest concept, Carbone’s which is located just next to Nosh on Oak Lawn in Dallas. Carbone’s compliments Barsotti’s Italian restaurant Nonna extremely well and features much of the fresh pastas, cheeses and sauces that he creates daily at the restaurant. At Carbone’s you may dine-in, but you can also buy the various components for your very own  Barsotti dinner at home.

In addition to fresh sauces and pastas, you will also find remarkable hand-made meats and salumi.    Continue reading
