Vegan Girl Gets an Exclusive Look at VSPOT Cafe

by Melissa Brenner

Anyone trafficking the strip of restaurants and bars on Henderson has noticed the increasing activity in the space next to The Pearl Cup. VSPOT Café is now clearly marked on the windows, but not much more about the much anticipated restaurant was known until now.

I sat down with the Chef Toria Villareal to get the real story on what VSPOT Café is all about. VSPOT Café has a projected opening date of October 17th. The menu will be all vegan, but the emphasis will be on health. Sadly, we know a lot of the vegan fare in Dallas is not all that healthy. VSPOT plans to change that and give us all the tasty yet healthy vegan eats we can handle.    Continue reading

First Look: Swig

by Danielle Leahy

Opening up in the old Park space  on Henderson, Swig bills itself as a Beer-garden and Speakeasy in combination with its bar the Gin Mill, located in the former Bar Celine spot in back. With much of the interior remaining the same Henderson Ave residents will feel right at home in the space now owned by the guys behind Capital Pub.

Swig boasts an impressive beer menu divided by country of origin as well as a very nice selection of Gins, Scotches, Whiskeys, and Bourbons in addition to its completely revamped menu.   Continue reading

A Fish and Two Goats, Or Why Strangeways is Aptly Named

by Steven Doyle

Last night I was out with a friend for dinner and we decided on Tei-Tei Robata Bar for a little relaxed sushi and sake action. Dinner was sparkling and we even happened to see former Tei-Tei owner and current Tei-An chef-owner Teiich sitting alone at the corner of the bar perusing the menu.

After a few rounds of sushi we thought to have a cocktail and happened into Strangeways, the new brew hall on Fitzhugh very near the new Herrera’s and Red Fork. The new bar is owned by Eric and Erica Sanchez and it is their foray into the hospitality business. The bar is festooned with interesting Mexican artifacts and loaded with plenty of  beers on tap and over 100 bottled. A great selection.    Continue reading

Wachu Tacobot Willis? Velvet Taco

by Danielle Leahy    photos by Jacque Manaugh

Look at these pictures. Just look at them. They say a picture is worth a thousands words but in the case of Velvet Taco only 6 are needed:  Best.Gourmet.Tacos.In.Dallas.Period.

Velvet Taco has only been open a few short weeks in Dallas, located in the old Church’s Chicken on Henderson and 75 but is already making major waves in Dallas’ emerging Gourmet Taco scene. With over 20 different tacos on the menu broken down in to 6 categories (chicken, veggie, pork, beef, fish, and egg) and an emphasis on fresh, local produce these tacos are have been hand crafted from the tortilla up. In fact, all of the tortillas at Velvet Taco are hand made in house.     Continue reading

Velvet Taco Scores a Win

by Steven Doyle

For months we all have been watching the little chicken shack on the corner of Henderson and Central, the gaping mouth of one of the busiest restaurant and bar streets currently in Dallas. What was once a Churches Chicken franchise has now been spiffed up into a taco behemoth that should satisfy most anyone on an all-taco diet. Of course we refer to Velvet Taco.

Velvet Taco is the brain child of long-time restaurateur Mark Brezinski (remember him from such restaurants as Tin Star, Pei Wei, and more recently Bistro Babusan) and the erudite group from Front Burner Restaurants who own Whiskey Cake, Red Dog Right, and the Ranch at Las Colinas.  Continue reading

Veritas Pig Roast July 3

Brook's Fave Facebook Photo

by Steven Doyle

It’s probably no secret we enjoy a glass of wine at Veritas or a beer at least once a week.  It’s a nice place to unwind, but also a cool gathering of people from all walks of life.  The tiny patio out front is always buzzing, and they have a fantastic wine and beerselection at fair prices.

We encourage you to jump to their website and sign up for email alerts as the team at Veritas stays busy with new ideas to keep things fresh.  One of the ways is by using the hell out of owner Brook’s Hasty Bake oven

He sent an alert recently that informs us of his latest patio grilling venture that includes a pig and some chef friends. You are invited!   Continue reading

Park on Henderson Closing: Details

Park's Chef Garreth Dickey

by Steven Doyle

As Nancy Nichols has reported, Park Restaurant is slated to close this weekend. We have all the details and I will share the email I received earlier today from the owner. Some of the employees have already found work and I will be announcing some of those changes this coming week. These restaurants plug along, sometimes bleeding cash for whatever reason, and when they close it puts many talented folks out of work.

With that said, here is the email from owner Donald Chick with the rest of the story:  Continue reading

Eddie Eakin Third Beer Cicerone for Dallas

by Steven Doyle                photography by Brad Murano

A cicerone is one that has been tested and proven to be an expert in the field of beer. Consider them to be a beer sommelier. Through their studies they receive this special designation according to the cicerone organization. Dallas now has three such designates with the recent inclusion of Veritas Wine Room employee Eddie Eakin.

We sat down with Eakin recently to ask him a few questions.     Continue reading
