A Foreshadowing Of Trinity Grove’s Chino

unoby Steven Doyle

Last week we chatted up the delightful Uno Immanivong who will be opening up Chino in the Trinity Groves area of Dallas along with her spirited partner Adrian Verdin. Uno is also appearing on the new Bourdain television reality cooking program, The Taste. This past weekend we were able to gain a bit of insight into Chino, and was pleasantly surprised by what she served Saturday evening.

The pop-up dinner was held in the comfortable digs at Four Corners Brewing Company, also in Trinity Groves. I had the pleasure to dine with Four Corners owner Greg Leftwich, who is also a huge fan of Uno’s work.     Continue reading

Dish On Chef Garreth Dickey At Dish

Chef Garreth Dickeyby Steven Doyle

A recent visit to Dish on Cedar Springs reminded me that Garreth Dickey is an amazing chef. I probably didn’t need that affirmation, nor does he, but it is always good to know when things are right in the world.

Chef Dickey developed his palate at an early age as he traveled the globe with his father sampling cuisines from exotic locales including Thailand, Africa and South America. The chef entered the culinary world as everyone in the industry should, as a dishwasher at the age of 16.   Continue reading

Belly & Trumpet Opens Feb 12

SONY DSCby Steven Doyle     photos by Joy Zhang

Been watching the former Bowery space on McKinney Avenue? It is now transitioning into a new restaurant the owners call Belly & Trumpet. Oak owners Richard & Tiffanee Ellman are teaming up once again with John Paul Valverde (who recently opened Outpost American Tavern in Oak Cliff) to create their take on small plates and they are bringing in big guns for the back of the house.

Look for Brian Zenner to take lead role as executive chef. Zenner most recently was chef de cuisine at Oak and worked at the Mansion on Turtle Creek. Zenner is bringing in another young gun from the Mansion, Rudy Mendoza who has been working at the upscale hotel restaurant since the Tesar era.  Continue reading

Start Your Year Eating Healthier At Start

DSC05329by Steven Doyle

The fast casual restaurant Start opened its doors back in August to a very eager and hungry crowd and has been busily creating a special menu of “good for you” foods that do not taste like diet fare. Start was conceived by Erin McKool who also created the menu and used her own recipes from home. This meant buying all the very best ingredients such as grass-fed beef, local honey and produce.

“Before my son was born I knew I was going to start a restaurant. After he was born I realized there was this niche you couldn’t find. There were no fast food places to dine that were healthy. I had a few go to places like Zoey’s, but you still had to deal with parking. You couldn’t go do a drive-through if you had someone asleep in the back. I started something I wanted, and I figured I was a pretty good representation of what people want,” said McKool.   Continue reading

The Lake House To Open In Old Dallas Bicycle Cafe Location

DSC05357by Steven Doyle

Meet John Schmitz and Eric Paulsen. Actually you may know these guys already; they have been serving you in several capacities for many years in a whole host of Dallas area restaurants and bars. Now the guys are about to open their own entry into the pub scene with their own new concept located in the old Dallas Bicycle Café location at 7510 E Northwest Hwy called The Lake House.

The Lake House will feature cocktails, craft beer and what they hope to be delicious bar food in an area bereft of this sort of talent. The pub hangs just off the White Rock Creek Trail and in the shares an enormous parking lot with Dallas Bike Works. The pair of new owners plan to work with the bike shop to gear events that will cater to riders who enjoy the trail, and liken the new spot to the Katy Trail.  Continue reading

Uptown Bar And Grill Sold To Kirby’s

uptownby Steven Doyle

Uptown Bar and Grill has been officially sold by the folks who owned Bailey’s Prime Plus, namely Ed Bailey. Interesting enough, the new owners are the people at Kirby’s and they have plans for a whole new concept. Bailey is looking to sell Chesterfield as well. This might be a great deal if you are wanting your own bar. And who doesn’t want their own cool bar?
