The Rustic Coming This Spring

Free Range Concepts partners, Josh Sepkowitz and Kyle Noonan announce their newest project, The Rustic, scheduled to open Spring of 2013 in Uptown at the prime corner lot of Lemmon Avenue and North Central Expressway in the West Village area.  Sepkowitz and Noonan, the team behind Bowl & Barrel, have partnered with Grammy nominated singer/songwriter, Pat Green and local businessman Brian Manion to open a full service restaurant and bar that will feature a dynamic outdoor “backyard” for eating, drinking and listening to live music.   Continue reading →

Kenny Is Opening His Smoke House Monday

Do you remember that time we told you that Kenny Bowers was going to open his Smoke House in the Shops at Legacy? If you read these pages often enough you know we love us some Kenny. The man has a knack for flavor and for style. He is a pretty cool cat in fact. All this is to say that the Smoke House is opening Monday.

Look for slow smoked meats and seafood, with full service, full bar and – wait for it – Grey Goose on tap. Go to 5760 Legacy Drive and follow the smoke.

FM Smoke House Opening Soon

The owners of the very popular gastropub Holy Grail in Plano are opening their first barbeque restaurant in Iriving and plan to call the restaurant FM Smoke House. The restaurant will be located at 660 Walnut Ridge Road; at the former Bennigan’s location on Highway114 and MacArthur Blvd.

FM Smoke House is a full service restaurant serving rural Texas comfort food. The menu is inspired by local eateries located along Texas’ rural farm-to-market highways that crisscross the state and lead to major cities. FM Smoke House will feature many smoked dishes such as bacon-injected brisket, beer can chicken, beef short ribs, beef tenderloin and house made hot dogs. Continue reading →

Mextopia On Greenville Ave Closed

Ricardo Avila is calling it quits at his wonderful restaurant on lowest Greenville Avenue. The man has endured plenty from the city with construction and other nuisances abound. Businesses around him folded all Summer long while Ricardo kept the home fires burning. Continue reading →

Blythe Beck Leaving Dallas For Gig In Fort Smith

This week could easily be titled Chefs on the Run, and today we bring you one more. Blythe Beck, formerly of Central 214 and her own pink television series The Naughty Chef is leaving Dallas where she has been catering and consulting since leaving her post at the restaurant located in the Hotel Palomar. Yesterday the chef announced she was packing her bags and heading to Fort Smith, Arkansas.

“This is a limited time engagement but I am so excited that I will get to see you all again and cook for you. Plus I am getting to work with an amazing staff, owner, and all new crew!! Dallas is my home but Ft. Smith is my new adventure,” Beck said on her Facebook page. Continue reading →

Ultra Sneak Peek Into Battuto Italian Kitchen

This past weekend I scored an invite to Gene and Julie Gate’s home where they said they were cooking up a few recipes that they will possibly offer at their new restaurant, Battuto Italian Kitchen which opens mid-February in the shopping center at Preston and Frankford.  I broke that story back in September and you can read about that here.

When I arrived I met their opening chef, Gustavo Herrera, who was last seen working at The French Room in Dallas. Gustavo is a man of culinary talents who hails originally from Peru where he met his wife who is a professor at SMU.  In the kitchen Gustavo was busily tossing a pounded chicken breast in a bath of porcini mushroom dust that would eventually be grilled and tossed into a special salad he has concocted. The salad also has grilled Asian pears and strawberries. Delicious.   Continue reading →

Derry Leaves Private Social, Natera Joins Marquee

There has been some crazy in the air the past few weeks. I  have been getting notes from all sorts of industry people the last ten days or so stating that Tiffany Derry was leaving Private Social. When I  finally sent a note to the restaurant’s publicist it wasn’t more than two hours later I read about the news on the Eats Blog.  We wish Tiffany the very best as she works out her new routine.

I think Tiffany is one classy cookie who can cook like no one else, and it will be interesting to see what she does next. I do recall her telling me about her own television program that was possibly in the works.

If the rumor mill is even close to being correct there is more afoot at Private Social that should extremely interesting. Continue reading →

It Is Elvis Month At El Ranchito

The good folks at El Ranchito located on Jefferson in Oak Cliff really have a thing for Elvis. What I thought was an annual impersonator contest has become more commonplace that the usual mariachis. In fact, January has been designated as a tribute month with alternating weeks switching between a professionally produce Elvis program and Elvis impersonation contests.    Continue reading →
