samsonsby Steven Doyle

There is a new dog coming to town and it has been in the making for over three years. Originally Samson’s Encased Meats was slated to open in the West Village, but the owners tell me that the deal fell through and to look for a location on Oak Lawn between Fairmount and Lemmon to open in March 2013.      Continue reading

Dukes In Addison Is Closed

dukesby Steven Doyle

Duke’s Original Roadhouse closed its doors in Addison today. Duke’s is known for their outrageous stunts such as “midget wrestling” and their annual turkey bowling, along with other antics to fill its halls. This was a popular hangout for the gentleman bikers which often filled the parking lot with their hogs on the weekends.   Continue reading

Maharaja’s Feast At Samar Jan 23

samar1by Steven Doyle

Stephan Pyle’s Samar is one of my very favorite restaurants. It reflects on how I dine, or like to dine. I do not normally sit down in front of a giant haunch of beef, in fact the last steakhouse I went to I appreciated the fish of the day.  How I do like to dine is with a group of friends surrounded by more than a few plates of food, paired with fantastic drinks or a good bottle of wine.           Continue reading

Quarter Bar Now Featuring Revolver Brewing

quarterby Steven Doyle

A recent visit to The Quarter Bar located on McKinney netted a great beer find. The Quarter is the little NOLA-style bar that is pretty much out of its element amongst the glitzier bars on McKinney, and sets pace of all its own to provide a more intimate and comfortable neighborhood environment. The bar food is sturdy and Wednesdays you will find many selections half price. Thursday the domestic beer and wells are a mere $2, which can give you a spiritual pre-weekend bartab relief. Ali Weighs In On Her Chicken Biscuit At Hypnotic

DSC04813by Ali Kay Hammer    photos by Steven Doyle

Editor’s Note: Earlier this month Ali married a beer. Just yesterday we announced that the young cheese monger had created a biscuit for Hypnotic Donuts using some fun, local ingredients. Today Ali sends word on how this all came about, and her thoughts on the process of creating the biscuit. The story was far too fun not to share with our audience, so find her words below. If you tried her biscuit and wish to offer comments, send her your cheers (or jeers) in comments. Having personally tasted the biscuit in question, I know you will all love this.

When James and Amy asked me to do a guest spot for January, they had no idea what they were getting in to, or maybe they did! I’m no chef, or cook, or any of that by any means. I’m simply an advocate for doing things that make you happy. For me, it’s easy. I like great food and I like to laugh, all of which I learned from my dad.

When I’m able to expose someone to the things I enjoy most and it brings a smile to their face, it makes everything I do worthwhile. Life is too short to not be ridiculous, and this biscuit is a reflection of just that. Go big or go home, I say! Let’s take it the extra mile, put MORE CHEESE on that; heck, throw some bacon on it too.  Continue reading

Playing with Music at Classical Open Mic

buzz2by Sally-Page Stuck

Buzzbrews Kitchen begins to fill. Students work on notebook computers. The after-work crowd relaxes over cups of coffee. Paintings of Bob Marley and Madonna stare down on a young man. He is practicing Handel’s aria, Lascia Ch’io Pianga.

Amid the restaurant clammer, somewhere around 8:00ish, Mark Landson wanders up to the stage, violin in hand. Dressed in a Sun Studios t-shirt, jeans and pleasantly worn black boots, he could be any dude hanging out at a coffee bar. Then, he starts to play the hauntingly familiar strains of Bach/Gounod’s Ave Maria. He plays with such loving intensity, he transforms into another Rudolfo, Puccini’s romantic leading man in La Boheme.         Continue reading
