Dallas Beer Week Starts Nov 12

by Steven Doyle

Dallas Beer Week is upon us and craveDFW plans to be your source for all things beer during the coming week leading up to the first events beginning this weekend.  For the past few weeks we have been scouring the city in search of the best places to have a good craft beer during the nearly 90 (and growing) activities planned so far.

We chatted with Cathy Rascoe, the organizer of Dallas Beer Week and she said, “It has been a true labor of love for us and we are really excited that the Dallas craft beer community has embraced it. We really hope to make everyone proud and happy with the results this year and for several years to come.”

Rascoe also was the organizer of Houston’s very successful Beer Week.   Continue reading

Flip You for Dinner

by Steven Doyle

These are times of strange yet imaginative restaurant promotions. In recent months we have seen owners give away food freely to the public, feature half priced menus, and now this little bit of intrigue from Social House Addison, located at 5100 Belt Line. The price of your dinner is determined on a coin toss.

Flip for Food Mondays starts today, November 7 at The Social House in Addison. Patrons can come in, eat to their hearts content, and- if they win the coin toss- pay for only alcohol and gratuity.    Continue reading

Bloody Good Brunch: Bistro 31

by Steven Lindsey    photos by Rob Orta

In the trailer for Paranormal Activity 3, the young girls whose house is haunted are seen in front of the bathroom mirror chanting, “Bloody Mary! Bloody Mary! Bloody Mary!”—all in the hopes of conjuring up a spirit.

I also chant “Bloody Mary!” multiple times, hoping for a different kind of spirit to appear from thin air. It’s a technique that rarely works unless I’m standing in front of a bar. Yet when I proclaimed this mantra at Bistro 31, I had a truly otherworldly Bloody Mary that made me a believer in not just the supernatural, but the immense skill of GM and mixologist extraordinaire, Marcus Cascio.                                          Continue reading

Stalking Julie Powell Part Deux

by Steven Doyle

On slower days such as this we like to turn to Facebook for amusement. Nothing charms us more than a look-see through Julie Powell’s Facebook wall where she offers daily quips and anarchy. You may recall Powell from the book Julie and Julia, with the subsequent film of the same title.

She describes herself on Facebook as such: “I may be a narcissistic whore, a libidinous shrew, and a defiler of the institution of marriage, but other than that I’m really a very nice person.”

Stalk on with us as we filter through some of her updates.  Continue reading

Chef DAT Has a 27 Course Dinner Awaiting You

by Steven Doyle

Just caught word from the underground chef himself, David Anthony Temple (DAT). Seems he is celebrating life itself with the largest menu I have seen to date. Twenty seven courses (magical number, same as the name of the restaurant he is designing).

If you wish to make reservations we have the low down. Arrive at 7:30 Saturday night (tomorrow) at Spiceman’s FM 1410 – 1410 N. Fitzhughue in Dallas. The cost is $125 per person not including gratuity (prepay here or pay cash at the door). As always, it is BYOB.  Jump for the entire menu – and the list is long.    Continue reading

The Crazy Kolache Lady of Calvert

By Babs Hogan

Drivers are concerned about two things as they approach Calvert, Texas. The first is the speed trap within a mile of the city limits. Second, the mid-town traffic light, which seems to favor red. Frequent travelers on Highway 6 can be lulled as they pass decrepit barns, dry cotton fields, and rusted gates. Unless shopping for western-style furniture, decorative art, or rare antiques are on your list, it’s easy to drift through this four-block town without blinking. But that would be a mistake.    Continue reading

Alma Closes

by Steven Doyle

As reported this weekend by Uncle Nancy at D’s SideDish, Alma on Henderson has closed its doors. Not wishing to repeat news, we simply want to give credit to noted DJ Bryan Coonrod who predicted the demise of the restaurant over a month ago, noting a rapid decline of people on the patio and patrons in general.  Continue reading
