People’s Choice Breakfast: Smoke

by Steven Doyle

With a clear, hands down victory we award this weeks People’s Choice Award for Breakfast to Smoke located at the Belmont Hotel in Oak Cliff.

The funky hotel located at the highest point in Dallas has come into its own with the guidance of chef Tim Byres, who over the past year has garnered top honors not just locally, but across the nation. For those visiting Smoke for any meal they will surely attest to his ingenuity in the kitchen, with certain kudos to the Smoke breakfast and brunch menu which features such luminous dishes as a bruleed grapefruit served with the hearty Gristmill Cheese Grits-Hominy Casserole, or the House Made Ricotta Cheese Pancakes that is heavy-laden with a satchel of blueberries.  Continue reading

Groen-ing, the New Planking

by Steven Doyle                                                                                                                       photo by Robert Bostick

Internet driven trends, or memes, have been sweeping the world in viral proportions and it nearly takes a handbook to keep up with such unusual antics as planking, owling and batting. It doesn’t take long to flip through your Facebook stream to find one or more of these unusual poses on someone’s wall. It’s a trend that even the most awkward can master merely with the use of a camera phone and a willing subject.

With that said we have sought out even more unusual memes, because posing as an owl is fast becoming a dated fad.

Enter a few of these actual memes such as pillaring, which is the act of standing up-right and still. Be cautioned that death and injuries have been reported surrounding pillaring incidents. Go figure.  Continue reading

Eddie V’s Restaurant Week Sneak Preview

by Steven Doyle

Restaurant week is fast closing in on the DFW area so we decided to check out a smattering of menus and do some pre-Restaurant Week reconnaissance. Our first look is at Eddie V’s who recently celebrated their first anniversary in Dallas.

When we visited Eddie V’s recently we found a thriving lounge scene in the front of the restaurant. Dark with a retro atmosphere that harkened back to days when you might find cigars if the laws weren’t so restrictive. The musical act that night played dreamy tunes from the classic American songbook, something difficult to find in Dallas. Continue reading

Music Reviews: Yuksek, The Limousines

by Bryan Coonrod

Hey folks sorry for being away for a bit I have been busy with various DJ gigs and side projects. Now how about some new music?

Yuksek – Living On The Edge Of Time

Hailing from France, Yuksek is the brainchild of Pierre-Alexandre Busson a man who has been a producer, DJ and pianist in his musical career. This is Yuksek’s second release with this one blending a slightly electro pop feel with some alternative rock, think of Foster The People mixed with Neon Trees.   Continue reading
