Big Fat Elvis Alive And Well At Twisted Root

Big Fat Elvisby Jennifer Thomas

Today Twisted Root announced its new shake, a decadent treat that channels the King himself, Elvis Presley. The shake blends 12 ounces of Twisted Root’s creamy homemade vanilla custard with Dude, Sweet Chocolate’s Tub of Love spread; a combination of peanut butter, dark chocolate and banana; for a rich and delicious combination of Elvis’s favorite things. And for a little something extra, it has even more fresh sliced banana and two heaping scoops of Twisted Root’s roasted peanut and bacon mixture mixed in.

In creating the shake, Twisted Root owner Jason Boso called upon Dallas’s premiere chocolatier, Katherine Clapner of Dude, Sweet Chocolate fame, and he hinted that this is the first of many future collaborations for the dynamic duo.   Continue reading

DSC01171by Steven Doyle

It may have been a bit since you checked out Cool River, the super cool steak house in Las Colinas with an upscale sports theme on the bar half of the building. However long it has been, you may have missed a golden opportunity to relive some excitement. This past weekend Cool River played host to Duckhorn Vineyard’s Ashley O’Leary who brought with her some pretty amazing wines for patrons to sample. To pair courses with the dinner executive chef Rodman Shields and Cool River’s wine director wine director Dave Fiegel collaborated to bring guests a heightened experience.

Duckhorn Vineyards has spent more than 30 years establishing itself as one of North America’s premier producers of Bordeaux varietal wines. From its modest inaugural vintage of 800 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon and 800 cases of Merlot in 1978, to its addition of Sauvignon Blanc in 1982, Duckhorn Vineyards has crafted a tradition of quality and excellence that continues today.

It was a truly amazing evening, and guests soon found that Cool River’s Shields is an amazing chef. Check out the dinner and pairings for the evening. Be sure to add yourself to the mailing list for future dinners.     Continue reading

Where In The World Is Ricardo Avila?

by Steven Doyle photo by Robert Bostick

You remember Ricardo Avila who successfully operated his family restaurant for many years. It was after he was featured on a Food Network program making tamales that the marvelous Tex Mex spot was lifted to full on high demand mode and was ousted by interloping family members.

Avila went on to open Mextopia in April of 2010 and offered kicked up Tex Mex favorites on Lowest Greenville Avnue. At that time the tract of Greenville was under turmoil and the city was busy cleaning up the crime situation doing plenty of road work that kept clientele from seeing his restaurant. Avila compensated by offering nights with Latin Jazz, and even a fantastic bacon happy hour where you merely needed to purchase a single beer to enjoy large platefuls of his thick, sweet and spicy bacon.    Continue reading

Chef Andrew Bell Does A Menu Reset At Bolsa

pink green garnishby Steven Doyle

Chef Andrew Bell has been with Bolsa for just over a year, and more recently took over the iconic Oak Cliff kitchen as executive chef. It wasn’t until just a few weeks ago that Bell re-engineered the menu to be largely his. The menu reads exciting, and translates extremely well to the plate. We went in last night to check out the new menu, and was blown away with the many changes. Bell has settled well into the Bolsa kitchen and says, “ I took the time to acclimate myself with the kitchen and the staff of the restaurant and patiently waited for spring ingredients to show up. We will continue to find the best ingredients from local farmers, treat them with respect and cook them for the customers that know and love Bolsa.”

Andrew Bell began his career in the restaurant industry during high school and since then has worked in some of the most respected kitchens in both Dallas and Austin, making his cuisine decidedly Texan.  From Wink and Uchi in Austin, to Parigi, Citizen, Mercury, Nosh Euro Bistro, Aurora and most recently The Mansion on Turtle Creek in Dallas, Bell says, “I have been waiting for an opportunity such as this for a long time and have tremendous respect for the restaurant, the partners, the staff and the philosophy they stand for as well as working with the local farmers– I feel at home here at Bolsa.”

From the tastes of the new menu it is obvious that Bell has captured the spirit and history of Bolsa, and plays well within this striking version of farm-to-table mentality that has been a proven asset for Bolsa.   Continue reading
