Pizzeria Testa Is Screaming Good Pizza

DSC04068by Steven Doyle

The Neapolitan pizza craze continues to burn through the DFW area. The pizza is different, to be sure, but we have embraced this style which began with the first VPN certified pizzeria in Texas, Cavalli, which began its pie making in Irving.

Today DFW has a smattering of pretty fantastic Neapolitan pizzerias including the freshly opened Pizzeria Testa Napoletana Restaurant in Frisco which is owned by Rod Schaefer. Schaefer’s mother comes from a long line of Italian pizza makers. In fact the Testa family was once considered the royal pizza makers for the King of Naples. Continue reading

The Hall Collection At The Texas Sculpture Garden In Frisco

Sherry Owens - Coming Out Of Circleby Steven Doyle

I had the good fortune to visit the Hall Collection at the Texas Sculpture Garden located in Frisco at the Hall Financial Group Headquarters. My tour was hosted by Kristina Hall Hahsler, the collection manager and daughter of Craig and Kathryn Hall. You might recognize Kathryn from her Napa Valley wine label, and as former ambassador to Austria.

Craig Hall began collecting art early in his teen years, purchasing what he could afford. Today Hall’s collection is comprised of hundreds of pieces, some commissioned by him for the sculpture garden. “Art is good for the soul. It nurtures the spirit and inspires the imagination,” says Hall. “It makes me happy to see families strolling the grounds outside my office window and looking at the art. Art makes us think and helps us appreciate the beauty of our surroundings and the unique nature of our times.”   Continue reading

Dosa Truck Hitting Dallas Streets This Week (It’s Vegan And Very Delicious)

dosaby Steven Doyle

There’s a new food truck in town and it is owned by the people who brought the first Indo-Chinese food truck to the DFW area, Bombay Street Food, and we have an exclusive first look at the menu. The truck will be serving 100% vegan dosas and is hitting the streets starting Thursday evening at the Sprouts on Henderson near Ross Ave. You may also find the truck Friday at the Toys for Tots food truck rally in Deep Ellum which you can find at Gaston and Elm streets.

A dosa is a versatile Southern Indian street food that is prepared with a crepe-like shell made of rice and lentils, and filled with ingredients that can be served with varying spice levels. This makes for an interesting and practical offering for a food truck, and one that fills a niche the Dallas area desperately needed.   Continue reading

Dr. Spin’s Best Albums of 2012 Part 1: Numbers 11-20

by Dr. Spin

Those of you that are paying attention might be wondering about a couple of loose ends from the past few months, so I’m gonna take this opportunity to pat myself on the back. Back in August, I took, and passed, my Sandan test at aikido summer camp. Earlier this month, I also passed my CrossFit Level-1 certification. Even better, by the end of this week, I’ll have a little space carved out for anyone that might want to work out too, because we are signing on the new house this Friday.

Things seem to be coming together, and they are, but at the moment we are living in chaos. The apartment is in shambles and my wife and I are exhausted, yet we press on.  If there is anyone out there who has thought about buying stock in an energy drink company, do it before this weekend. I feel confident that’s going to be the only thing keeping me going by then …find out more at the Pharmacy

Dollar Oyster Domination; Sunday Nights at TJ’s

DSC04178by Melissa Robert

Ripped straight from TJ’s Fresh Seafood Market’s Sunday night Facebook post, dollar oyster domination kicked off last night to a full house. The discounts on oysters and fish tacos began at 8:30, but many arrived early, creating a buzz of excitement amidst the seafood enthusiasts. The mix of oysters included Blue Point, Barnstables and owner, Jon Alexis’ favorite, Fisher’s Island. He relayed how thankful he is to have them here since most are gobbled up by big name restaurants in the North East. He raved about the clean, sweet and briny notes of the Fisher’s Island oyster.    Continue reading

The Dallas Santa Rampage is set for December 15, 2012. This is the event that invites all the Dallas Santa’s to join and follow a route that is a closely held secret until the day of the event. Last year hundreds of Santa’s met at Lee Harvey’s for cocktails then followed a route that led them across the downtown area via light rail and ended in Deep Ellum before making a return trip.
