Eat Me: Kelly’s Reuben At Plano’s Kelly’s Eastside

reubenby Steven Doyle

There are some pretty tasty dining options in downtown Plano as I found out last night, beboppin’ in an out of more than a few last night. One such choice landed us at a spot called Kelly’s Eastside for one of the tastiest sandwiches we have sample in a some time. Perusing the menu, and after sampling the extremely rich crab artichoke dip, we left the selection to our bartender. We were up in the air about a burger or a sandwich. We are always on the hunt for the next best burger, so there is always that bent. And when ordering a burger we generally get it as close to plain as possible for two reasons. First, it just looks better in a photo. And second, you are able to actually taste the burger with out the addition of giant shards of avocado, or spilling in chili.  Continue reading

Deli Man Premiers in Dallas at the Angelika March 20th

deli man

For some, delicatessen food is close to a religious experience. A tender, crumbling cut of corned beef steeped in its juices. A full-bodied garlic dill pickle. Spicy brown mustard with grain. A blintz that melts in your mouth like a creamsicle on a summer’s day. Recipes and culinary garnishes from Hungary, Poland, Russia, Romania that flowed into late 19th and early 20th century America and soon became part of an American culinary and cultural vernacular – Deli.

DELI MAN is a documentary film produced and directed by Erik Greenberg Anjou; the third work in his trilogy about Jewish culture. The celebrated preceding films are “A Cantor’s Tale” and “The Klezmatics – On Holy Ground,” which have to date screened at more than two hundred international film festivals and have been broadcast in the U.S., Israel, Canada and Poland. The principal guide of DELI MAN is the effusive and charming Ziggy Gruber, a third-generation delicatessen man, owner and maven (as well as a Yiddish-speaking French trained chef) who currently operates one of the country’s top delis, Kenny and Ziggy’s in Houston, Texas. Kenny and Ziggy’s has been touted in press reviews ranging from “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” to the L.A. Daily News.   Continue reading

Eat Me: Quail “Wings” at Bowl and Barrel

quailby Steven Doyle

Chicken wings will always be all the rage in bars because they are so easy to make as they are to eat. Flavor delivered on its own natural stick, if you will. Dim Sum Of This At Kirin Court

by Steven Doyle

What might possibly be the Chinese version of tapas, dim sum is more than just a meal. It is a gathering and a ritual. Dim sum is as casual as it is formal.

For the uninitiated, dim sum is an assortment of steamed vegetables and dumplings, roasted meats, soups, noodle rolls, baked goods and tarts. Actually so much more hopefully. All the food items are presented in groups of threes in tiny steamer baskets made of bamboo or steel and hand selected based on the groups desires and shared communally with plenty of hot tea and lively conversation.               Continue reading

The place with the funny name on McKinney Ave in Uptown Dallas has some pretty tasty food. We popped into So&So’s last night for a cold beer and found the pizza to be terrifically thin and crispy, just the way we prefer in case you are keeping tabs at home.  Be we also tasted the deconstructed pastor, which is a fancy way of saying pork belly nachos.    Continue reading
