Review: Five Creeks Tavern

20151203_190614by Steven Doyle

Five Creeks Tavern in Highland Park Village is located in a space which has had past identity troubles. Those troubles seem to have magically vanished in light of this new Italian hot spot that caters evenly to local families and  single adults alike. The menu is decidedly red checkered table cloth Italian replete with one of the better examples of VPN Neapolitan pizza made in an imported wood burning oven, a slew of pasta dishes where guests can easily mix and match sauces and pasta varieties.   Continue reading

Jimmy’s Food Store News

by Steven Doyle

We love our Jimmy’s Food Store. Not just for the killer good sandwiches, the best price for Parmigiano-Reggiano (the only cheese with their own theme song), and the best horde of Italian wines in the state, but also their email blasts that keep us informed of their doings at the East Dallas grocery,

Located at one of our favorite intersections in Dallas (think Urbano Café, The Dallasite, Mai’s Vietnamese and more) Jimmy’s is a little slice of New York’s Little Italy.   Continue reading

Adelmo’s Celebrating 25 Years

by Steven Doyle

Tucked neat and tidy on Cole Avenue you might spy Adelmo’s, the cute Tuscan hide-away that is perfectly romantic and sultry.

Adelmo’s has survived the many faces of the Dallas restaurant scene and is pretty much today as it was 25 years ago when Adelmo Banchetti first opened his doors. Here you will find the obligatory Chianti served up with dreamy dishes such as Osso Bucco and a variety of house-made pastas. Each day you will discover a new chef’s menu hand-scrawled outside the front door listing off the day’s specials drawn from fresh ingredients just delivered. There are several choices for dessert included, and we recommend the warm bread pudding with a brandy caramel sauce. Battuto Turns One

dsc06231

by Andrew Chalk

It is hard to believe, but Battuto Italian Kitchen, the north Dallas neighborhood Italian restaurant established by radio personalities Gene and Judy Gates, is turning one. To celebrate, they held a media event “Taste of Battuto” with a special 7-course menu and I was fortunate to be invited.

If you were enthused by Battuto’s original concept of inspired Italian cuisine made from carefully sourced ingredients then there is good news — the concept remains as strong as ever. Despite chef changes, the kitchen remains consistent thanks to able sous chef Erik Wolf, formerly of Bolsa. A search continues for an executive chef to replace Joel Harloff, who left last month, but, says Gene Gates, there is no rush. “We want the right person and are willing to wait until we find them”.     Continue reading

White Truffles Have Arrived At Nonna

white truffleby Joey Stewart

Combine one of the best foods on the planet with one of the best restaurants in Dallas and what do you get? One of the best dishes in the city made by one of our best chefs.

Chef / Owner Julian Barsotti’s shipment of Northern Italian White Truffles arrived on Wednesday, and he wasted no time incorporating them into a rich, decadent dish of handmade, delicate pasta. His “Tagliolini with White Truffles” includes a sauce made from Fontina cheese, butter, milk, and egg yolks, along with a “red cow” parmigiano, or Parmigiano Vacche Rosse, which has a higher butterfat content than the typical white or black coated breed. At 36 bucks, the price stings a bit, but so many establishments in Dallas price their best dish at $45 and above that it doesn’t feel unreasonable. Especially since you get a full 3 ounces 3 grams of the shaved fungus on each plate. Get it while you can.    Continue reading
