Here Is Our Restaurant Advice For This Weekend

DSC00730by Steven Doyle

You want to eat at all the hottest places in Dallas this weekend, well I have a few stand up choices. With all the new openings we all love to try and hit the new ones before going back to our old reliables. If you are like me you love to add new spots to the rotation of restaurants. I will admit to one major obsession, and for those that know me even in the slightest will guess that obsession has been Shell Shack on McKinney Avenue. Shell Shack has served me well nearly twenty times since opening less than two months ago. One really good reason is because their kitchen is open until 1am, except Sunday where they close at 10pm. Should you drop by there, ask for what I usually get, which is a pound of Dungeness doctored up with a spicy concoction they call ‘the kitchen sink’. There are different spice levels, and I typically go hot instead of the very hottest which is called diablo. You can add potatoes, corn and even a tasty sausage.

I have actually written very little about Shell Shack, unless you happen to follow me on Facebook where I beat down my friends weekly with enticing photos of crab. The whole affair can get quite messy, but they have hand washing machines on the ready.   Continue reading

LUCK Celebrates North Texas Beer Week

beer weekby Steven Doyle

We are pretty stoked about this whole North Texas Beer Week which begins this Saturday with the Brewvolution event at Fair Park (tickets still available). There will be beer specials and even special beers being pour across town and we will be reporting on some of the better findings as we uncover them. We are particularly excited to see that LUCK over in Trinity Groves  is participating, and why wouldn’t they?  Their mantra is beer, and they carry plenty of the local stuff for a mere sawback a pop. LUCK will have a special beer featured each day with a dollar off the already wonderfully priced taps.

If you go in Saturday after the Brewvolution all beers are a buck off with a ticket stub to the event, they only ask that you order an item off their food menu. For a quick bite we recommend the bierocks, but all the menu is delicious and on the cheap. Don’t get me started about the house-made pastrami.  Continue reading

LUCK Has 40 Quality Craft Beers For $5 Each

LUCKby Steven Doyle

Last night I popped in to Trinity Groves to see how the opening night at LUCK (Local Urban Craft Kitchen) was going. I was able to chat up the owners and they were all pleasantly happy with the first night turn out, which they said was largely made up of people from around the neighborhood. I would assume these people enjoying large slabs of pot roast and those delicious beirocks were most likely from the northern most sections of Oak Cliff.

As I made my way to the bar to enjoy a few choice selections from the tap, I was pleased to be informed that all the beers were a mere $5. This is the same pricing scheme that Union Bear adopted early on, but has since abandoned that most excellent offering. These are the same delicious beers seen across the city selling for up to $9 a pint.    Continue reading

First Look: Trinity Grove’s Local Urban Craft Kitchen (LUCK)

DSC00668by Steven Doyle

Trinity Groves is shaping up to be the new restaurant Mecca that it had agreed to be more than a year ago. Weeks ago Kitchen LTO popped open its doors to a sound crowd and early reviews, and yesterday round one chef Norman Grimm served his first lunch crowd. Meanwhile, Souk has had better than expected covers for their dinner service which started last Thursday. The next restaurant to open for business is LUCK, or the Local Urban Craft Kitchen which is very beer focused. We snagged a first look at LUCK last evening during a mock service.

While LUCK is not quite ready for service until Wednesday evening, they are quickly making those few last minute adjustments. As for the food, very little needed adjustment and the service flowed smoothly.  After walking the long road to opening day, LUCK is eager to serve you some interesting food that pairs extremely well with a choice of more than 40 local brews on tap, several choice wines and kambucha for constructing beer cocktails. LUCK is the brain-child of partners Jeff Dietzman, Daniel Pittman and Ned Steel, with Pittman acting as chef even though the three-some are all trained for the job.     Continue reading
