Celebrate Dia de los Muertos in Dallas

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is not a Mexican version of Halloween. Though related, the two annual events differ greatly in traditions and tone. Whereas Halloween is a dark night of terror and mischief, Day of the Dead festivities unfold over two days in an explosion of color and life-affirming joy. Sure, the theme is death, but the point is to demonstrate love and respect for deceased family members. In towns and cities throughout Mexico, revelers don funky makeup and costumes, hold parades and parties, sing and dance, and make offerings to lost loved ones. Continue reading

It is National Margarita Day. These foodie holidays can be a bit wearisome, but this is one day I can circle my wagon around. It also happens to fall on Chili Day, which we have provided handily for you to enjoy. But let’s take a look at some specials going on today and a look at our favorites. Because it is a day to celebrate.
We spoke with Leann Berry last night, she is part of the Dream Team who re-opened Cedars Social recently. Berry is the ace bartendress behind the new concept and has been named repeatedly one of the best bartenders in Texas, and even more specifically one who makes the best margarita. Mexican Sugar Celebrates One Year in Plano

Mexican Sugar, a Latin-inspired restaurant from the creators of Whiskey Cake Kitchen & Bar and Velvet Taco, made its debut one year ago in the Shops at Legacy in Plano. Mexican Sugar is a concept unique to Dallas, and certainly Plano, with a Central and South American menu with a basis in Mexican cuisine that seems to appeal to everyone. Not to mention the tequila library showcases over 100 different tequilas, which keeps the local crowd coming back for more.
We had an occasion to stop in for a bite this week and enjoyed our visit which was elevated by the extremely professional server, Marina. You will know her by her lush Russian accent, but more by her brilliance and knowledge of her menu, including cocktails. Meet Mover and Shaker Bonnie Wilson

Now in its eighth year, Bombay Sapphire and GQ Magazine’s “Most Imaginative Bartender” program traveled to over 40 US cities and welcomed more than 3,500 participating bartenders in 2014. With the aim of advancing best-practice bartending, cultivating mixologists’ skills and encouraging their creativity, the “Most Inspired Bartender” program has played a pivotal role in recognizing up-and-coming cocktail cities, as well as strong holds such as New York and Portland.
The local contest which sends the winner on to compete nationally was held this week in Dallas, and the winner of the competition was Bonnie Wilson, the beverage program manager for Frontburner’s Fork It Over Restaurants (The Ranch at Las Colinas, Mexican Sugar, Whiskey Cake, Velvet Taco). As good fortune would have it, we spoke to Ms. Wilson recently and had a spirited conversation in this Q&A. Continue reading
