Review: Sara Hickman

sara1by David Indorf

Sara Hickman returned to the scene of many of her most successful performances, Poor David’s Pub, for a Valentine’s Night show, and this one can be added to the “Memorable” folder. David Card is well known for treating his artists like family, which makes for some terrific concerts.

While Ms. Hickman is a talented musician in her own right, she gleefully ceded the yeoman’s share of the music making to local guitar wizard Sam Swank, whose acoustic and electric guitars added a different atmosphere to the songs so many in the audience have enjoyed for years. Absent a guitar cord tether, Ms. Hickman’s inner chanteuse was free to prance, preen, and prowl all over the stage and into the audience, to the expected delight of all in attendance. The only thing missing was a feather boa.       Continue reading →

A Good Fortune: Shinjuku Station

shin2by Angela Hopkins

Shinjuku Station is like falling in love and only you know what your heart feels but you cannot do it justice with words, but I will try.  The décor is deconstructed and trendy.  An exposed brick and narrowed black and white photography filled wall, Japanese characters on curtains dividing the kitchen from the bar, an old wide bench that sits four, about 10 tables set up back to back along the brick wall and a sushi bar for eight or so hugging around the back side of the kitchen.  Whether you wait for a bit or are seated as you walk in, begin with an “Overflow of good fortune.”   Continue reading →

I Imagined Dragons

idragonby Brittany Finnell

The streets of Dallas near the AAC were filled with herds of people on Monday, although this particular night the crowds were moving in opposite directions.  What!!–not everyone walking about was headed to watch the Mavs?  The scantily clad tweensters, hipsters, and music-folk alike were headed to the House of Blues for the sold out and highly anticipated Imagine Dragons feature, while dedicated Mavs fans made their way to check out the Hawks.  Continue reading →

Your Golden Ticket To A Perfect Valentine’s Day

wonkaby Steven Doyle

Procrastination is the hearts worst enemy so it would seem. Looking for that last minute Valentine’s gift option could prove difficult, but many of the area chocolatiers have stocked up and are bracing themselves for one of their busiest days of the year. We have a guide that will help you geographically snag that perfect box of chocolates that should keep you looking like a charmer that you really are.

Your significant love has been perfectly sweet all year and deserves something a bit better than a box of drugstore chocolates, so please do not be tempted by those horrific cellophane samplers.           Continue reading →
