The Blind Butcher Coming To Lower Greenville

IMG_5479by Jennifer Thomas

Matt Tobin and Josh Yingling, the team behind popular East Dallas bar Goodfriend Beer Garden & Burger House, have joined forces with Chef Oliver Sitrin, formerly of Village Marquee Grill & Bar, to open a new concept on Lower Greenville. Expected to open late spring, The Blind Butcher will focus on house-made meats and, of course, a stellar lineup of craft beers.

“With the addition of Trader Joe’s, the food truck park, and several restaurants, there is a renaissance taking place on Lower Greenville. We’re excited to be a part of the area’s revitalization,” says co-owner Matt Tobin. Continue reading →

Food and Fashion: Lunch with Ashley Burghardt

ash1by Jayne Chobot

There are actually people who laugh when fashion and food are mentioned together. Even I was once told that I can’t be known for both. Pshaw, as a Southerner once taught me to say. I have learned over the years that people who are passionate and talented in one creative area are generally passionate and talented in others, even if it’s not widely known. To succeed as an artist of any kind, an inner fire must be working that can’t help but spark other areas of brilliance and desire. I was delighted to learn last month that this theory is undoubtedly true of Dallas’s purse darling Ashley Burghardt, of Ashard Richley. Ashley and I met for a lovely brunch at West Village’s Moroccan restaurant Baboush (how thrilled was I when she did not request Tex Mex?) and I caught a glimmer of the depths of this woman’s intrigue.       Continue reading →

Review: Soulfish Grill

soul4by Steven Doyle

Soulfish Grill would otherwise be noted as a quaint neighborhood bar if you were a casual passerby in scratch of a beer or cocktail, but scratch away the nautical patina and you find that it is a pretty tasty restaurant in disguise. I spent the first half of Fat Tuesday getting fatter noshing on a few shared plates with friends at Soulfish, and fell in love with the food, drinks and the people that patronize the two year old bar.

As it happened, this particular also evening fell on the monthly meeting of the Dallas Ukulele Club. The club is a vibrant mix of young and old ukulele enthusiasts from around the area, and basically filled the bar up with their members. For a fortunate few sitting at the bar we were able to take in the entertainment as a fly on the wall.      Continue reading →

What Are You Craving For Valentine’s Day?

What-do-you-Crave-for-VDay-800by Erica Guajardo

What do you CRAVE for Valentine’s Day?  This is the question on everyone’s mind I am sure.  On Thursday, February 14, 2013, Valentine’s Day will be officially here.  What will be on your agenda to do?  Many of us are considered single and don’t have that special someone to enjoy the day with, although some of us do.  So I have created a few out of the box suggestions for both worlds to enjoy on this loving day.

If you are someone who is short on cash, but would like to make the day unique, try a special edible gift for your friends and love ones to enjoy.  Although many of us crave this time of year were chocolate covered strawberries are in high demand, another alternative is chocolate pudding cupcakes with strawberries.  This is a creative way to get your chocolate fix and spread some cheer. Plus when you cut the cupcake in half, to share with that special someone, the strawberries look like tiny hearts.    Continue reading →

Coastal Flavors Weekend

7 ORGANIZER KAREY B JOHNSON PASSES OUT FRIED OYSTERSby Joey Stewart

A gluttonous weekend of food, fun, and information at the inaugural event of Coastal Flavors in Rockport, Texas.

The weekend began Friday afternoon at the charming restaurant GLOW. GLOW was showcased previously here on Crave, and owner/chef Karey B. Johnson organized the entire event.

The backyard patio party started off with live music and an assortment of drinks, including bubbly, wine, and a choice of specialty cocktails. A team of oyster shuckers arrived, and after a few short minutes, the trays of ice beds were full of the tasty bivalves. The local oysters had just been harvested from the waters less than 5 hours before. What a great way to introduce the event.   Continue reading →

The Second Floor At Marquee To Transition Into Sushi

sushiby Steven Doyle    photo by Joey Stewart

Just weeks ago we learned that Marquee chef Tre Wilcox was leaving the restaurant he helped open, and the restaurant hired former Fairmont Hotel chef Andre Natera. Nataera started as chef at the beginning of February and has been doing a fantastic job as top toque, working with Tre’s menu for the time being and putting out some amazing specials that are being trialed for the new menu which should roll out very soon. Even bigger news is what will become of the second floor that the owners announced would be transitioned into a separate restaurant. There has been plenty of speculation.   Continue reading →

Lays Announces Top Three For The Big Flavor Hunt

lays flavorsby Steven Doyle

Lays announced their three finalists in their big hunt for the newest flavor where the winner would receive a cool ranch million. I suggested a flavor hoping to at least be considered for one of the third world nations; however it is quite possible that Lays already has Balut chips on the shelves in the Philippines. The finalists are instead Cheesy Garlic Bread, Chicken & Waffles, and Sriracha. A bit obvious if you ask me, but I do not sell billions of pounds of potatoes worldwide.

Doing some minor research for unusually flavored potato chips I ran across some flavors Americans might find unsettling, and a few that would do rather well if they were marketed properly in the States.

Jump with me for a look at a few packages I found.    Continue reading →
