Santa Rosa For A Pupusa And Plantain Fix

by Steven Doyle

Sometimes you need to satisfy your inner-Salvadoran by checking out on of the few restaurants in Dallas that serve the South American cuisine. This week we went to Santa Rosa on Walnut Hill, next to one of our favorite dive bars, A Step Up Lounge.

Santa Rosa is a fairly large restaurant in a decaying North Dallas strip center, and they serve mainly Salvadoran food with a few exceptions of fajitas and several Tex Mex items to appease the gringos. This means you will find pupusas, fried plantain, banana leaf wrapped chicken tamales and the best black beans in the area.      Continue reading →

Resto Gastro Bistro Closing

DSC07975by Steven Doyle

We received word yesterday that there is yet another fall-out in the restaurant industry, this time in Trinity Groves.

We have written many times about one of our favorites located just across the Hunt-Hill bridge in west Dallas, Resto Gastro Bistro. Cheffed and owned by DJ Quintanilla, he sent word that they were indeed closing. Here is that missive:   Continue reading →

PB&J’s For Soupmobile Dallas

sand1by Brenna Witt
Taking inspiration from the record-setting Sandwiches for Soupmobile group, our team was organized as an alternative for those who follow a meatless lifestyle. PBJ Sandwiches for Soupmobile meets the first Friday of each month from 7:30-9:00pm at CityScape Apartments to make sandwiches for Dallas area homeless.
Our work is as easy as it is effective. Volunteers are invited to bring supplies from our list:  food prep gloves, ziplock sandwich bags, creamy peanut butter, jam or jelly, and vegan breads like Trader Joes, Sara Lee, Thomas, Cobblestone Mill, and Arnold. We spread the love until supplies run out, and ask for volunteers to take completed sandwiches to Soupmobile on Saturdays.

Some Enchanted Evening At Mercat

cocktailsby Steven Doyle

The word Mercat is the Catalan word for “market” which gives a slight foreshadowing of what diners might expect at the cozy, if not romantic Dallas Uptown bistro.  The tiny space inside gives a true bistro feel, and that same sense flows out onto the patio which overlooks the beautiful green space that is part of Mercat’s sister restaurant, St. Ann. On the evening we made our last visit, the night was simply simpatico with the the beautiful song styling’s of local crooner Hunter Sullivan. As one of our first courses arrived we enjoyed tunes from the Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Tony Bennett songbooks. Fireflies sparked across the lawn, and beautiful wines rushed to our heads as we smiled with the perfect dining selection for the evening.    Continue reading →

Dallas Gem: Great American Hero

great americanby Jennifer Thomas

What a treasured gem we have in the Great American Hero located at 4001 Lemmon Avenue in Dallas.  Serving since 1974 the Hero looks a bit worn, but that is due to the fact they have cranked out untold sandwiches to happy guests since before I was born.

Service is never lacking at Hero and there is always a line of employees to help your sandwich choice along. Often you will spot the owner who takes great pride in entertaining new guests as they enter the building. He awards newbies with a free fruit cup (yum) and regales his history with pride.     Continue reading →

The Lodge For Dinner? Why Not!

lodge1

by Steven Doyle

First allow me a moment to inform our readers that I love my job. I enjoy writing and rarely get any sort of block, I enjoy the feedback from everyone who enjoys the reports I file on the food and entertainment scene in the Dallas and Fort Worth area, and I especially enjoy the research that goes into the stories published here.  With that stated, you should know that I dispense the assignments for the handful of contributors you find on craveDFW. This is why when the thought of going to The Lodge, one of Dallas’ premier gentleman’s clubs, I was quick to allow myself the story.

When I go out to dine and take photographs I generally take people with me so we might order more dishes for a larger perspective of a menu. We were on our way to The Lodge last week when I asked my friend if he had ever been to the club and he said no. It was a few minutes later that he realized we were on our way to a men’s club. This made for interesting conversation to say the least.    Continue reading →
