Why Our Jewish Friends Eat At Chinese Restaurants On Christmas

DSC04620

by Steven Doyle

I have plenty of Jewish friends and several have invited me to their traditional Christmas dinner, which is sweet and I thank them. I will probably accept one or all of those invites, but curiously there will be no dry turkey, cranberries or pumpkin pie for that matter. Most include a trip to the local Chinese restaurant for that truly traditional Christmas meal.

This odd tradition might date as far back as the day before Jesus was born, where there was no room at the inn — or a decent restaurant open late that night. Perhaps the only choice in Bethlehem was the local Chinese restaurant serving up kung pao or General Tso chicken and those little dumplings that have been seared in schmaltz to a fine crisp.  Continue reading →

Celebrate Festivus in Dallas

by Steven Doyle

Festivus is a holiday created by the writers of the now syndicated television program, Seinfeld. The wildly popular show featured the weekly antics of Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer as they battled through life in New York City. Often times they would be disturbed from their self indulgences forced to interact with their parents. One particular episode the viewers discovered a quirky holiday made up by the father of George Costanza, Frank.

Most of what was written into the television program was based on real life, and this is true with Festivus. In real life Festivus dates back to 1966 when Dan O’Keefe, former editor of Reader’s Digest decided that Christmas was too commercial to celebrate. Years later O’Keefe’s son, Daniel, would write for the series and included it into a script that ran in December, 1987.   Continue reading →

Lunch at Theodore

img_8782by Rhonda Dutton

I have seen six of Wes Anderson’s eight films, so I would say that I’m a fan (and now need to go back and see the remaining two). Therefore, I was so very open to The Theodore’s magic little world in NorthPark Center. Gifted to us by the same cast of characters who brought us Smoke, Bolsa and Bolsa Mercado, Chicken Scratch, The Foundry, and Bar Belmont, The Theodore transports you from modern luxury shopping to a charming world in Wes Anderson’s mind that is also inhabited by Teddy Roosevelt.

This theme is consistently delivered everywhere, even on the menu which feels like it could have been torn from TR’s personal diary.   Continue reading →

A Look at the Tesar Spoon Pop-Ups

For those of you following the many activities of John Tesar you would have noticed that he is one busy chef and in great demand. When the chef is not busy rocking Knife, his kick ass steakhouse in Dallas, or doing one of the many charity events he is so popular for, or his second coming on the current season of Top Chef, Tesar is is still not satisfied.

We noted some time ago that Tesar is also adding another restaurant to his menu in the form of a burger stand in Plano next year. But for a real slice of the chef you should check out one of his pop-up ventures where he has been recreating his beautiful but shuttered seafood restaurant, Spoon.    Continue reading →
