Ultra Sneak Peek Into Battuto Italian Kitchen

This past weekend I scored an invite to Gene and Julie Gate’s home where they said they were cooking up a few recipes that they will possibly offer at their new restaurant, Battuto Italian Kitchen which opens mid-February in the shopping center at Preston and Frankford.  I broke that story back in September and you can read about that here.

When I arrived I met their opening chef, Gustavo Herrera, who was last seen working at The French Room in Dallas. Gustavo is a man of culinary talents who hails originally from Peru where he met his wife who is a professor at SMU.  In the kitchen Gustavo was busily tossing a pounded chicken breast in a bath of porcini mushroom dust that would eventually be grilled and tossed into a special salad he has concocted. The salad also has grilled Asian pears and strawberries. Delicious.   Continue reading

Derry Leaves Private Social, Natera Joins Marquee

There has been some crazy in the air the past few weeks. I  have been getting notes from all sorts of industry people the last ten days or so stating that Tiffany Derry was leaving Private Social. When I  finally sent a note to the restaurant’s publicist it wasn’t more than two hours later I read about the news on the Eats Blog.  We wish Tiffany the very best as she works out her new routine.

I think Tiffany is one classy cookie who can cook like no one else, and it will be interesting to see what she does next. I do recall her telling me about her own television program that was possibly in the works.

If the rumor mill is even close to being correct there is more afoot at Private Social that should extremely interesting. Continue reading

It Is Elvis Month At El Ranchito

The good folks at El Ranchito located on Jefferson in Oak Cliff really have a thing for Elvis. What I thought was an annual impersonator contest has become more commonplace that the usual mariachis. In fact, January has been designated as a tribute month with alternating weeks switching between a professionally produce Elvis program and Elvis impersonation contests.    Continue reading

The Whole Belly Clams Are In At Sea Breeze

Shake For Second Base Event Raises Tips For Tatas

Last night Sissy’s hosted an amazing cocktail event that raised considerable cash for the American Cancer Society and featured female bartenders from The Cedars Social, Whiskey Cake, Marquee Grill, The Windmill Lounge, the highly anticipated reservations only bar The Establishment.

The barmen also pitched in behind the stick to provide a completely packed house some amazing cocktails featuring spirits from Kettle One, Bombay Saphire, Caña Brava, Cointreau, Angel’s Envy, Dulce Vida, Glenrothes, St. Germaine, Dolin, Bitterman’s Bitters and beer from Deep Ellum Brewing Company. Orin Swift Dinner At Culpepper’s To Feature Seven Chefs

Winemaker Dave Phinney will be on hand for a special dinner at Culpepper in Rockwall January 31, 2013 starting at 7pm. The owner of Orin Swift Cellars has an interesting and storied history and will share his adventures in wine with the crowd. The Culpepper wine dinners always sell out quickly and for very good reason. The winemakers are always top shelf, and Executive Chef Chad Bowden consistently plans for the special occasions. Joel Harloff Resigns From Second Floor

Chef Joel Harloff has resigned from the Second Floor at the Westin Galleria leaving a position available. Owner Scott Gottlich sends word, “Chef Joel A. Harloff will be leaving The Second Floor Bistro – Bar this month, and I wish him well with his future endeavors. I am excited about the opportunity to announce a new executive chef soon.”
