The Moose Report: El Come Tacobot

comby Alex “Moose” Perez

If you weren’t aware Dallas, there is a taco club that exists and they’re called Tacobots, which had a regular column on craveDFW for a long time.  The Tacobots came out of long winter hibernation and chose El Come Taco as their first target to chow down some tacos.  I had the pleasure of meeting the Villava family which happen to be the proud owners of this delicious taco joint.

El Come Tacos opened it’s doors in Novemeber 2013 and has been serving street-style tacos to the masses.  According to the Villava brothers Luis and Francisco, they wanted to open a taco restaurant based on their own personal philosophy: food that was of highest quality and wanted to serve up “original Mexico street-style tacos”.  Speaking of quality, there were a few things that really impressed me about Come Taco.   Continue reading

The Moose Report: An Opportunity To Eat Plenty Of Danks On 4/20

dankby Alex “Moose” Perez

We have asked Moose Perez to join our elite fleet of craveDFW contributers. The Moose is a professional competitive eater who has downed plenty of wings, pizzas, and hot dogs, to mention a few items. Follow along a he sends us periodical reports on local and national competitions, plus an occasional article on his favorite restaurants. If you would like to create  a competition at your business, contact the Moose at craveDFW.

My first question when I first heard of this local food competition was “what in the heck is a DANK?” Upon reading about what it was all about, I knew this was something I wanted to share with our readers, and possible future eaters. Of course, I was deeply saddened knowing that under my contract restrictions, I would not be able to compete, but why not inform others of this feat.    Continue reading

Where The Moose Graze

We asked local competitive eater Moose Perez where he has been dining lately and he sent us over a short list. Interesting restaurants. We will check in with Moose on occasion.

When it comes to food I’m sure to be as picky as any Foodie, but when it comes to food competitions, you can bet I’ll eat anything thrown at me.  There are four things that take precedence to eating and making it best choice for me: environment, service, drinks, and more importantly, quality of food.  Here are my TOP FIVE places to eat that meet Moose criteria.    Continue reading

The Taco Hunter At Taqueria Pinocho

by Alex Perez

Taqueria Pinocho is located conveniently off Abram and Carroll Ave in a small shopping center, known as one of Dallas’s ‘authentic’ taco shops.  Taqueria Pinocho was my first introduction to taquerias in the Dallas area thanks to a good friend of mine.  So I found it fit of course to do my first taco visit for craveDFW.  Pinocho has been open for years now and is owned by Francisco Gomez.  Although, the location is not in one of Dallas’s best neighborhoods, do not let that deter you from enjoying the tacos from Pinocho.

As you walk in, you can’t help but to start salivating from the smell of meat and tortillas.  Walk up to the counter, you’ll see all the meats stewing in their own juices which a technique called Guiso – the fat from its own meat stewing in the broth and making all the ingredients come together.  The setup is very clear and simple when ordering tacos: you chose from a selection of 15 different proteins for your tacos, the staff quickly chops the meat and yet another guy places the meat onto a corn or flour tortilla and plates.  The next guy hands you the tacos and 3 different types of salsas – green jalapeno, pico de gallo and red guajillo chili sauce.  Tacos range in price anywhere from $1.10 to $1.35 depending on your tortilla.         Continue reading
