Sushi Was The Star At Yutaka’s Celebrity Chef Charity Dinner

1 WideEventby Joey Stewart    photos by Joey Stewart

The scene was a Japanese food lover’s dream last Sunday evening at Yutaka as the Chef/Owner presented a seven-course menu for guests, each of whom donated $200 to benefit the victims of Hurricane Sandy. The menu was created and executed by the host and three of the top sushi chefs in the U.S. as shortlisted by Travel + Leisure magazine in 2012.

The rock star chefs in attendance were Ken Namba of Kiriko in Los Angeles, Taichi Kitamura of Sushi Kappo Yamura in Seattle, and Hiroki Fujiyama, the executive chef of Morimoto in Philadelphia.    Continue reading

Food Truck Of the Week: Bento Box

bento1by Steven Doyle

I ran across a newish food truck this week, Bento Box. They are primarily a Fort Worth truck, but I found them in Dallas for a special event. The thought of sushi in a food truck, which in the summer can exceed 110 degrees, was at first disarming. When I spoke to the owners, chef Scott Kaiser and his lovely bride Brandi, those thoughts of odd fish quickly went away. Using the term chef generally does not apply to most food truck operators, but in this case it is not only well deserved, it is accurate.

The couple actually have a storied restaurant career and met while both were working at the Cafe Modern located in the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Scott was cheffing while Brandi worked the front of the house. Continue reading

Japanese Food Porn From Sharaku Sake Lounge

by Steven Doyle         photos by Joey Stewart

CraveDFW contributor Joey Stewart prepared this photo essay during a recent visit to Sharaku Sake Lounge, a particularly wonderful izakaya. Consider a izakaya like a Japanese tapas bar which offers sake and small plates like crispy fried morsels called kushiage, grilled skewers called kushiyaki, and shabu-shabu which are meats cooked tableside in steaming pots of broth.

Sharaku has the same owner as one of the very best sushi bars nearly next door, Yutaka Sushi Bistro. Both spots are fresh, contemporary and exemplary. Both are located in a small strip center in the 2600 block of McKinney in Uptown Dallas.

There are plenty of fun dishes to order from the menu while washing them down with bottles of Kirin, or one of the many sakes and custom cocktails.  We will let the dishes speak for themselves today as Joey walks us through his dining experience.

First Look: Sapporo Ramen and Sushi

by Steven Doyle

Just over one month ago Sapporo Ramen and Sushi open in the Chinatown Center in Richardson. This same shopping center is host to many Asian restaurants, from Chinese, Vietnamese and Japanese. There is even an Asian Grocery on board.

The Sapporo sushi chef is none other than super-star chef Sean Kang who also runs his culinary kitchen studio at Oak Lawn and Inwood. There he caters high end fetes and most recently a Kardashian. Don’t let that deter you from his amazing cuisine.             Continue reading
