alice1by Jennifer Thomas

One of the hottest new apples in the marketplace is now arriving for the first time this season to grocery stores across America. The Rainier Fruit Company is delivering the largest shipment yet of an apple that literally came to life as a chance seedling in its orchards in Eastern Washington. The Lady Alice brand apple is arriving in stores this week to consumers coast to coast.

Lady Alice is available now through May, or while supplies last at many major and independent grocery retailers.  Production of this apple has increased since its limited introduction just three years ago as its appeal with consumers has taken off.   Continue reading →

Blow-Up Gallery’s New Frontiers Show

Wenli Liuby Erica Guajardo

As an artist who is emerging in Dallas, I know how hard it is to break out and let your art be shown to the public.  Regardless of personality traits, you have to be someone who is willing to open up and allow themselves to be judged. On Saturday, February 2, 2013, I had the pleasure of attending an art show at Blow-Up Gallery, which presented pieces from emerging and veteran artists residing in Dallas.    Continue reading →

Locally Speaking: Martin’s Biscotti

martin'sby Steven Doyle

I have been running into a talented gentleman for some time now and have enjoyed his product, Martin’s Biscotti. Biscotti di Prato are those delightful twice baked cookies that make coffee time seem like a thrill ride on a boardwalk. Biscotti are oblong-shaped almond cookies, made dry and crunchy through cutting the loaf of dough while still hot and fresh from baking in the oven. My man Martin Vandiver, along with his beautiful bride Ann Cichon, and daughter Elizabeth run EMA Baking Company who makes these five flavors of biscotti does an incredible job.  Continue reading →

Seven Chefs and a Winemaker Dinner At Culpepper’s

DSC05446by Steven Doyle

It is always inspiring to catch one of the many wine dinners at Rockwall’s Culpepper Steakhouse. Chef Chad Bowden sincerely goes to great lengths to find interesting winemakers to make the trek to Dallas, and then drive another 20 minutes east to Rockwall to host a fantastic evening celebrating wine and food.

This past week was another shining example when Bowden invited a few of his cheffy friends over to play, including Eric Black from Tony C’s, Randall Copeland from Ava, Ted grieb from the Fatted Calf, Pete Harrison from Dakota’s, and Dan Landsberg from ZaZa’s Dragonfly. I always enjoy watching a gaggle of chefs collaborate in the kitchen. You hear some fantastic war stories, some which cannot be repeated, and you hear plenty of laughter. There is a sense of synergism watching them assist with each other’s plating. There is also a healthy dose of unwritten competition.     Continue reading →

Robyn Checks Out The New Meso Maya

pibilby Robyn Folmar

One of the perks of climate change in Texas is dining outdoors on a ridiculously sunny winter’s day. Thankfully, Dallas has another stellar patio to enjoy a margarita this toasty February.

Steps away from the new Perot Museum of Nature and Science, Meso Maya aims to break through the Tex-Mex clutter by offering its take on authentic interior Mexican food. If you haven’t already eaten at their other location on Preston & Forest, the restaurant pays homage to the expansive Latin American culture by focusing on roasted chiles, tomatillos, white cheese and moles. They steer clear of the ubiquitous “brown & orange” palette we know and love in Texas.   Continue reading →
