Chefs Line Up To Benefit Genesis Women’s Shelter December 19th

aq3by Anastacia Quinones

In May, I was asked to participate in a dinner benefiting Genesis.  I do charity events all the time but this time I really wanted to know what I was donating to.  I asked to have a private tour of the shelter and Chefs Carolanne Treadwell, Janice Provost and Dina Butterfield came with.   We were so pleasantly surprised to see that this place felt nothing like a shelter but more of a home.   A safe environment with apartments, schools, full cafeteria with 3 healthy meals being served daily.   They had therapy rooms and even a garden.  But we weren’t all smiles for long.

Pizzeria Testa Shines in Frisco

DSC04068by Steven Doyle

The Neapolitan pizza craze continues to burn through the DFW area. The pizza is different, to be sure, but we have embraced this style which began with the first VPN certified pizzeria in Texas, Cavalli, which began its pie making in Irving.

Today DFW has a smattering of pretty fantastic Neapolitan pizzerias including the freshly opened Pizzeria Testa Napoletana Restaurant in Frisco which is owned by Rod Schaefer. Schaefer’s mother comes from a long line of Italian pizza makers. In fact the Testa family was once considered the royal pizza makers for the King of Naples.   Continue reading →

Inca’s Cafe Transports You To Peru

incas_cafeby Steven Doyle

Inca’s Cafe is located in Carrollton just off George Bush and Josey, in the same strip center as the Target which you will find on the corner.  What looks to be very ordinary, and possibly even mundane from the outside, turns out to be a whimsical ride through Machu Picchu in Peru. Inca’s serves up some pretty terrific Peruvian dishes, often with a side of live music to keep with the beat of the theme.

Owned by Candy Vera, who purchased the restaurant from her mother. “In 2003 my mother started the restaurant using all of our family recipes. My grandmother’s, and further back” said Vera. Candy Vera was working for Merrill Lynch at the time as a broker, and at one point invested in the restaurant to help take it to another level. She eventually bought her mother out, and now runs the restaurant by herself. She talks of expansion, catering (which she does now to a happy list of clientele) and even going back to school for some culinary lessons to help elevate those old family recipes. Not that she needs to, because what we found was thoroughly delicious, and reminiscent of my  travels to Peru.  Continue reading →

I Can Cook Like A Texan, But I’d Druther Eat Like One

klyde

by Rhonda Dutton

On Sunday, Texas Monthly and Infinity hosted the first ever “Cook Like a Texan” pop-up picnic in Klyde Warren Park. The picnic involved tastings of main dishes, sides, and sips from Texas chefs, restaurants, and local brands. I was one of many lucky Texans that got to picnic in the park, here are a few of my family’s faves.   Continue reading →
