Post Card From Nola: The Alibi

by Dorothy Hernandez

Bar food doesn’t immediately bring to mind gourmet, or even edible, food. Its purpose is utilitarian, whether you’re trying to soak up the booze or prep for a night of heavy drinking. The choices are pretty standard: fries, nachos, any heat and serve product that you can take out of a bag and dump into a deep fryer.

At The Alibi, 811 Iberville in New Orleans, there are mysterious dollar bills pinned to the ceiling. Even at 1 p.m., it smells like Bourbon Street at 3 a.m. It seems like a bar this dive-y would have food only fit for the inebriated but The Alibi is one of those serendipitous vacation finds.

Weinberger’s Delicatessen Celebrating Tenth Anniversary

by Judy Chamberlain

Dan Weinberger may well be the King of Sandwiches. The Earl of Sandwich may have invented putting some meat between slices of bread, but Dan’s perfected it. A third-generation sandwich maker celebrating the tenth anniversary of his homey Grapevine deli, Weinberger learned to make sandwiches from his Dad in Chicago. The family’s first eponymous Weinberger’s Deli was founded in the Windy City in 1952.   Continue reading

Look What I Ate At Mad Hatters

by Steven Doyle

I stopped in at Mad Hatters yesterday for a late lunch after spotting their daily special listed on their Facebook wall. I am a sucker for soft shell crabs and they dangled this beast  before me like the mad men they are, so I flew across town at break-neck speeds.  I am totally happy that I did.  Continue reading

Going Local at Bolsa Mercado

by Steven Doyle

This weekend we took a stroll into the fairly new Bolsa Mercado top check out some of the local products they are moving at break-neck speeds. We ran into on of the owners, Chris Zielke and he showed us around a bit. You will recognize the name from his other Bolsa, the restaurant, just a few doors down the street.

“This is so much different than running the restaurant. I come in on a Monday morning and the shelves are bare, and I have to start all over again,” said Zielke.                Continue reading

Urban Epicurious Top 10 Food Porn Moments: Scardello

by Bev Garvin

Bev Garvin is a friend of craveDFW, a local social media buff and photographer who maintains a pretty cool local site called Urban Epicurious. Bev joins us to celebrate her top 10 favorite food porn moments of the recent past. We will run these over successive days so you may savor each bite.

Another equally seductive sandwich, but for totally different reasons, is the Sweet Italian from Scardello Artisan Cheese near the corner of Lemmon and Oak Lawn in Dallas. I stopped in for a quickie and grabbed this to go one day while out running errands at lunch. It’s lusciousness swept off my feet as I indulged in it’s niceties.  Continue reading

A Perfect Reuben at Old World Sausage Company

by Steven Doyle    photos by Robert Bostick

Strolling through Shed Two at the Dallas Farmer’s Market I discovered a few new tenants and one that we have seen repeatedly for several years. I have actually enjoyed stopping in to visit with the Old World Sausage Company for the fantastic Sinatra tunes they play all day. But our usual is the Vienna Dog, or as I lovingly refer to it as the Chi Dog.

You know the dog. It’s the one with the firm poppy seed bun and plenty of toppings including sport peppers and that crazy neon green relish. It’s distinctively Chicago as are the owners of old World, Al and Adrianne Capua.             Continue reading

Eat the Uber Burger, Make it a Double

by Steven Doyle   photos by Robert Bostick

In the short few months Uncle Uber’s Sammich Shop has been open the Deep Ellum restaurant has made quite a name for itself. They make a truly fine sandwich with pretty incredible ingredients. But in the past weeks we have been hearing tall tales about their burger and decided to launch a full-on investigation.

Uncle Uber is actually Bryan and Kathy Crelly, local restaurateurs that have run other successful operations such as Fat Ted’s, Pueblo Arriba, Rockwell’s Neighborhood Grill and Uptown Bar and Grill. These are no amateurs in the industry.   Continue reading
