The Wonderful World of Pumpkins in Dallas and 10 Places to Find Them (And A Bonus To Boot)

pumpkinby Steven Doyle

We as Americans have an odd relationship with the pumpkin. Sure, we stock up on the squash as decor during the Halloween season (which according to retailers begins in August), and adorn our tables as centerpieces with them during the eventide of Thanksgiving, but as far as a true dining offering we fall short.  Continue reading

The Best Gumbo in Dallas 2017 Edition

gumboby Steven Doyle

Today is National Gumbo Day so we are celebrating as we only know how, with a giant list of fantastic places to enjoy your favorite bowl of goodness.

Gumbo is that delicious pot of stew that starts off with a roux, that chocolate brown thickener that gives gumbo its distinctive hue and rich flavor. In New Orleans a meat-based gumbo may consist of chicken, turtle, duck, squirrel, rabbit or alligator. Seafood-based gumbo generally has shrimp, crab, and sometimes oysters. Most varieties of gumbo are seasoned with a special mirepoix consisting of onions, bell pepper, and celery, or what they call the Holy Trinity. Today, most people are familiar with seafood gumbo and chicken and sausage gumbo.   Continue reading

Corral Corrientes 348

grill cookingby Steven Doyle

In a city where meat is king and steakhouses are landing faster than the Bugatti Veyron, it is refreshing to find something a bit out of the ordinary. Meet Corrientes 348, the new Argentinian steakhouse located in the former Stephan Pyles vast location on Ross Avenue.

Argentinians have a fondness for meat, or rather an “asado” or “parrillada.” Meats are cooked on a parilla (grill) while attendees enjoy socializing and drinking wine, typically a Malbec. Parrilla culture is largely about patience and enjoying the company they keep. Staying true to their roots, the restaurant will have a dramatic open flame parilla (custom-made in South America) anchoring the main dining room with 20 seats surrounding it.  Continue reading

Jen Kirkman at Kessler Oct 21st

unnamed

Jen Kirkman is back on tour this year – with all new material.  Stories and jokes you haven’t seen on her Netflix specials.  Don’t worry.  It’s not all about Drumpf – why talk about him when Jen can talk about herself and her year of seeing fraudulent spiritual healers, holidays without family, being accused of not being “woke” by young people, and tales of when she was a young obnoxious third party voter, and pretentious hater of pop culture.

Jen Kirkman is a national and internationally touring stand-up comedian. Her 2015 Netflix Original Comedy Special “I’m Gonna Die Alone (And I Feel Fine)” was named one of the Top 10 comedy specials of 2015 by Time Out New York, New York Magazine, and The Atlantic.  Her most recent Netflix Original Comedy Special, “Just Keep Livin’?” is streaming worldwide as of January 3rd, 2017.
