Happy Pi Day, Ya’ll

On March 12, 2009 your lawmakers  passed a non-binding resolution (HRES 224) recognizing March 14, 2009 as National Pi Day. It is one of the more legit holidays we discuss here, and it is actually an homage to geeks everywhere who see the date as a reason to celebrate due to its mathematical implications. We say any reason to celebrate anything is just fine by us.

Deep Ellum’s Stonedeck Creates A Maddening Pizza For Super Bowl, And You’re Going To Love It

Stonedeck Pizza already does some very non-traditional pizzas. We have been fond of the Chicken Tikka Masala version. Read about others here in a past report. But not to be outdone by themselves, the good folks at Stonedeck have created a monster of a pizza that even Dr. Frankenstein might question. Actually, it sounds ridiculously delicious, especially on a hangover. Half of the pizza is Buffalo Chicken flavor; half is Firehouse #3 flavor.  Continue reading →

Eat Me: DaLat’s Chili

Plenty can be written about Khanh Nguyen at DaLat. He is definitely the king of the late night menu, serving pho and plenty of other interesting Vietnamese items on into the night.  Arrive at 1:59 and you will be welcome to order, whereas any other establishment would be sweeping and shaking you off to find bad waffles for your 2am fix. Many of the late night patrons are waiters, bartenders and chefs. Others arrive directly from the bars that surround the neighborhood. All are welcomed with a steaming bowl of pho, or one of the many other items that will definitely sooth your soul.

And damn those delicious little DaLat shooters which are Vietnamese meatballs seared and sunk into a spicy broth of sake, coconut and cream. Toss your head back for a moment of bliss.    Continue reading →

Pizzeria Testa Shines in Frisco

The Neapolitan pizza craze continues to burn through the DFW area. The pizza is different, to be sure, but we have embraced this style which began with the first VPN certified pizzeria in Texas, Cavalli, which began its pie making in Irving.

Today DFW has a smattering of pretty fantastic Neapolitan pizzerias including the freshly opened Pizzeria Testa Napoletana Restaurant in Frisco which is owned by Rod Schaefer. Schaefer’s mother comes from a long line of Italian pizza makers. In fact the Testa family was once considered the royal pizza makers for the King of Naples.   Continue reading →

Greenville Avenue Pizza Company Recognized by Fortune Magazine, Opening Second Location

Since opening in 2007, Greenville Avenue Pizza Company has worked hard to establish itself in Dallas— persevering through a recession, riding out neighborhood development and even changing its business model to embrace delivery. The little pizza shop’s drive has paid off, as Fortune magazine has just named GAPCo one of this year’s 100 fastest-growing inner city companies, as ranked by the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City.

With an impressive five-year growth rate of 324%, GAPCo earned the #34 spot in the ranking. And they’re not done yet, as the company is opening a second location soon and hopes to open several more in the next few years.   Continue reading →
