Remembering an Era: The Automat

Horn & Hardart was once the world’s largest restaurant chain, serving 750,000 people a day. What was once considered high-tech is actually from an era long past, filled with rich romanticism. Audrey Meadows worked at one in the film “That Touch of Mink”, and Joan Crawford leered longingly at a slice of a patron’s pie in “Sadie McKee”. It was the Automat, and was extremely popular in northern states with the first introduced in Philadelphia in 1902 near Independence Hall.
Horn & Hardt Automats became so popular that they spread quickly, landing in Manhattan in 1912. These were homes to the disenfranchised of the industrial age, and were met hungrily by ad-men who hung monikers on the new-style restaurants such as “Try it! You’ll Like It!”, “New Method of Lunching”, and “Less Work for the Mother”. Continue reading

What’s Eating Your Phone?

I get out quite a bit, and sometimes do not have my trusty Sony camera with me, so like most I will use my iPhone to snap a few photos for Facebook, or to remind me of something later. Generally this has to do with dining or tippling. I thought it might be fun to pull off a few photos from the phone and share those today in a bit are reviving and call What’s Eating Your Phone?

Savor Dallas 2017 A Screaming Success

Another successful year with Savor Dallas, the areas largest food and wine festival as it introduced some amazing event locations, highlighted the area’s best chefs, slurpy good wines and cocktails and some of the best fellowship this city has to offer.
Each of the events laid out for the week replayed a version of Who’s Who of the hospitality industry which always makes it fun. Catching up on the latest restaurant news is certainly a great by-product of these types of events. Continue reading

More Names Released For Legacy Hall

We have some new information on the Legacy Hall project that is underway and is expected to open late summer. Although slated for August or September, word is now that construction is moving swiftly and they are currently ahead of schedule.
