CBD Provisions To Open At Joule

by Steven Doyle

Look for CBD Provisions to open at the Joule Hotel in the Spring of 2013. This will be an “American eatery” that will feature American comfort food with an artisinal standard. This translates to local and region sourcing along with responsibly raised meats.

CBD was developed by Dallas-based Consilient Restaurants and led by operating partner Greg Katz who is currently managing Victor Tangos located on Henderson. Previously, Katz served in various management capacities at Il Mulino in New York City, The Carlyle Hotel in New York City, and Rosewood’s Mansion on Turtle Creek in Dallas.        Continue reading →

Mesa Veracruz Has New Fall Menu

by Steven Doyle

Raul and Olga Reyes have been on the Dallas restaurant scene for some time now. First the coupled opened La Palapa Veracruzana which shuttered in 2009, then more recently with one of the finest interior Mexican restaurants in Dallas, Mesa Veracruz Coastal Cuisine. Natives of Veracruz, Mexico, the couple stay true to their craft, enhancing the menu to reflect the seasons and the taste from their roots. The menu was just recently updated and we were invited to sample some of the new cuisine.

You may still enjoy the classics such as Mesa’s ceviche, which is made sweet with a slight tomatoey goodness and the addition of ripe avocados and fresh cut cilantro that reminds me of my first vacation in Mexico. Or the classic Enmoladas which is made with house-made mole which takes a full day to create and well over 20 ingredients. The family has mad skills.   Continue reading →

by Steven Doyle

Today marks the first anniversary of Goodfriend Beer Garden and Burger House. Goodfriend is known for their quality brews and a menu created by Jeana Johnson and Colleen O’Hare of neighboring Good 2 Go Taco which features a ration of superior burgers. Goodfriend owners Matt Tobin and Josh Yingling would like to invite you and a few hundred of your closest friends to stop by tonight from 4 p.m. to close. Expect awesome drink specials, and featured beers such as Great Divide 18, Stone 16, Real Ale Barrel Aged 15, Ommegang Independence Day 2012, Deschutes Black Butte 24, and Real Ale Scots Gone Wild.

A special guest band will take the stage at 10 p.m., followed by a Slick 57 reunion set at 11 p.m.

I stopped in to chat with the guys a few days ago and enjoyed a spirited conversation on how they started the bar, update on the package store across the street and why they can’t have anything nice.      Continue reading →

Truluck’s Addison Closed

by Steven Doyle

I just spoke to Bo Dorton from Truluck’s after getting a Deep Throat sort of tip that the Addison restaurant would be closing after sixteen and a half years of operation. Dorton started with the restaurant seventeen years ago and actually opened the Addison location, so it was a particularly disheartening bit of news for him to take.

The closure is due to losing their lease on Belt Line, but they will be opening another massive location near Downtown on McKinney. Truluck’s other locations remain open.

It may be no coincidence that this is the beginning of stone crab season.

Bishop Arts Walking Tour This Weekend

With so much history behind it—from Bonnie and Clyde to its one-time status as Dallas’ busiest trolley line—the Bishop Arts District is been begging to be explored.  So the folks behind Dallas Bites! and Dallas by Chocolate decided it was a natural for those who might wish to eat their way around the neighborhood, and learn about its past.  The first Bishop Arts Walking Food & Historical Tour was held on the gorgeous afternoon of September 30, and it did not disappoint.  Tour guide Jeanine Stevens led 16 hungry guests down alleys and over cobblestones to discover the area’s hidden treasures, both gastronomical and cultural.

First stop: Veracruz Café, which describes its menu as Mesoamerican, Mayan, Huateco and Aztec cuisine.  Guests sampled such unusual appetizers as picaditas, a pizza-like arrangement topped with black beans, tomato sauce and fried cheese, and a salsa that featured guajillo chili peppers grilled with cilantro.    Continue reading →
