Bacon Tour 2012

by Steven Doyle

It’s no secret that I am a wandering tour guide for the city’s best restaurants. I feel it is my role at craveDFW and I am an actual food guide on weekends with Dallas by Chocolate. But I have done this for years. Weekends I would take my friends on tiny excursions around Dallas on warm Saturday afternoons, showing them my favorite spots to hang out for a cold beer or a savory bite.

Our impromptu tours might have included grabbing a bottle of wine and a sandwich at Jimmy’s Food Store, only to enjoy on Tom Spicer’s back patio next door which during a conversation might lead to the best mussel battle and we would be off to enjoy a shared batch at Vickery Tavern. This would lead to tacos at Cool and Hot in Oak Cliff, followed by cocktails at Bolsa and a late pizza and a beer at Nova on Davis.    Continue reading →

Del Frisco Italian Wine Dinner

by Steven Doyle

Last week we attended the latest wine dinner hosted by sommelier Jennifer Jaco at Del Frisco Double Eagle Steakhouse. This was one of her more imaginative dinners and executive chef David Holben was totally on his game with the menu. Holben’s background, besides training at Michelin 3-star restaurants in France, includes The Riviera, for almost a decade one of the city’s premier restaurants. He also ran the kitchen at Mediterraneo and Toscana, a few of the more compelling Italian restaurants in Dallas history.

This was an interesting evening witnessing Holben’s departure from his typical Del Frisco menu.

While Jaco worked the room ensuring the comfort of her guests, we were guided through Italy vicariously through the fascinating stories and anecdotes of Italian wine expert Dan Rosenberg. By the end of the spirited evening most of the guests were chomping to book a flight to Italy. It is always a joy to see stand back and watch Jaco in action with her over-the-top wine knowledge and eagerness to share. DAT Underground Dinner Friday, September 7, 2012

by Steven Doyle

More news from Chef DAT as he makes his way back from his holiday that included nine states and seven underground dinners. DAT has gathered some new ideas and a fresh perspective and will share the recipes and stories of the trip at a special dinner this weekend.

The underground dinner will feature six courses for $70 and is BYOB as usual. We have the full menu below. From the looks of the menu it would appear that DAT picked up an immersion circulator, always a fun gadget to have in a kitchen.      Continue reading →

A Cookie Collaboration

by Steven Doyle

From the woman who brought us some of the most delicious cookies imaginable, Pam Denesuk has always maintained that life is too short to eat an average cookie. We whole heartedly agree. The owner of Great One Cookie Company has managed to take her company to epic heights in the short one year it has been in business.

You may recall this was the cookie of choice at this year’s Academy Awards.         Continue reading →

Fried Jambalaya and Fried Bacon Cinnamon Roll Take Top Fair Fried Honors

by Steven Doyle

It’s that time of year again when the State Fair food vendors roll out their deep fryers from storage in an attempt to win the top prize for the wackiest fried food imaginable. Last week we listed the finalists which consisted of eight out of over forty new items being introduced this year. Winning the competition is said to be worth an extra $200,000 in sales to the winner, so the stakes are high and the competition is fierce.

Abel Gonzalez was back and won the top award with his fried jambalaya ball. Abel’s offering had a crispy outer shell filled with a spicy rice, sausage and shrimp mélange with a side of his own kicked up ranch dressing. This is the very same gent who concocted fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches,  fried coca cola, fried cookie dough and more recently a win for his fried butter.         Continue reading →

Where To Find A Good Steak In Dallas On The Cheap

by Steven Doyle

Probably not a week goes by that a reader asks where to find a good haunch of beef. We invariably tell them one of the many steakhouses across the Dallas skyline depending on where they live. We love Nick and Sam’s. It could be that they pass out caviar like it was candy, and sincerely… isn’t it? We also love Pappas Brothers in all their wine goodness.

Tonight several craveDFW staffers will be at Del Frisco Double Eagle for a wine dinner. We love somm Jennifer Jaco and never bypass a moment where we can visit with her even for a few minutes. Chamberlain’s Steak and Chop House also is a staff favorite, and we love his cigar room. Plus you get Richard Chamberlain, and that always makes for  fun evening.          Continue reading →

Paul Singhapong’s Special Dinner At Malai

by Robyn Folmar

Earlier this week at Malai Thai-Vietnamese Kitchen, owners Yasmin and Braden Wages hosted another great off-menu dinner with guest chef Paul Singhapong.

Many of the spices used were bought by Chef Singhapong on a recent trip to Thailand. Chef Wages told guests that the menu for this 5-course meal was in the planning stages since May.  The food was plentiful, flavorful, and perfectly suited for a hot August evening in Texas.      Continue reading →
