Chef Jill Bates Takes Leave of Fearing’s Pursuing Consulting Biz

jill_b.jpgby Steven Doyle

Not long ago we ran into chef Jill Bates, the recently  former pastry chef at Dean Fearings eponymous restaurant located in the beautiful Dallas Ritz-Carlton. We asked about her departure and she made it very clear the move was bitter-sweet, not too unlike the chocolate  she uses with some of her marvelous pastries.

“We are still family, great friends. In fact we will see each other next week”, Bates told us during a phone conversation. Continue reading

Temaki Fun at Sushi de Handroll

Ext A

by Joey Stewart

While not to the extent of the poke craze, handroll bars are becoming quite the thing on the Dallas culinary world. Riding the wave of Namo and Nori Handroll Bar comes a third introduction, Sushi De Handroll, which recently opened at The Hill at Walnut Hill and 75. The restaurant is tucked away from the street, slightly hidden in the beautiful interior courtyard on the backside of Nazca and Snooze.

The space is brightly lit, especially before sunset when the sunlight can penetrate the large windows that face the courtyard. The eight-seat bar and six tables are built into and around the handroll bar, allowing the chef to deliver them immediately as they are finished to diners surrounding the bar. Continue reading

A Peek Down The Grill On The Alley

by Steven Doyle

How The Grill on the Alley escaped us in the past is beyond our comprehension. The restaurant located just outside the Dallas Galleria has quietly been serving up some classic dishes, along with some of the best steaks and seafood that can be found in Dallas for the past 9 years.

The restaurant, which originally hails from Beverly Hills, is a throw- back to more refined times when big dishes were served with expert care.       Continue reading

Picasso’s Pizza and Grill

pic3by Steven Doyle

Picasso’s Pizza and Grill is this sweet neighborhood Italian eatery that now dots our Dallas landscape. You will find the original location (moved about a block to newer digs) in Lake Highlands, plus several more locations including North Dallas, Preston Hollow and very soon in Southlake.

The pizza and pastas are sturdy with rich red sauces, fresh ingredients and a large selection that would please nearly every hungry soul. On a recent visit we found a restaurateur that dines there several times a week. The regulars are fiercely loyal and for good cause. The prices are comfortable, the dining room is broken up into smaller manageable rooms as to give families their own space, and couples theirs. The bar is also nearly sealed off giving it its own cozy feel.  Continue reading

A Savory Slice of History at Fuel City

by Steven Doyle

The Cockrell family moved to the Dallas area in 1847 and purchased the part of John Neely Bryan’s homestead that included the Dallas town site and Trinity River ferry. Eventually the family opened a sawmill, lumberyard, gristmill and freighting business. The land they owned spread far on the rolling banks of the Trinity making up the family’s ranch, however, now much of that legend has been forgotten.

Today you may once again spot cattle roaming proudly where they once grazed, but now a skyline of concrete and steel are the backdrop where once only windmills and oil pumps could be seen.   Continue reading
