Where To Find A Good Steak In Dallas On The Cheap

by Steven Doyle

Probably not a week goes by that a reader asks where to find a good haunch of beef. We invariably tell them one of the many steakhouses across the Dallas skyline depending on where they live. We love Nick and Sam’s. It could be that they pass out caviar like it was candy, and sincerely… isn’t it? We also love Pappas Brothers in all their wine goodness.

Tonight several craveDFW staffers will be at Del Frisco Double Eagle for a wine dinner. We love somm Jennifer Jaco and never bypass a moment where we can visit with her even for a few minutes. Chamberlain’s Steak and Chop House also is a staff favorite, and we love his cigar room. Plus you get Richard Chamberlain, and that always makes for  fun evening.          Continue reading

A Preview For The Sēr-Curious

by Steven Doyle

Last evening I was an invited guest of the Hilton Anatole to sample a few of the dishes that might be making the Sēr Steak+Spirits menu when the restaurant opens for business this October. On hand was Anatole’s executive chef Thomas Welther and Sēr executive chef Anthony Van Camp who served dinner to a group of local writers and Hilton brass.

Due to construction on the 27th floor where Sēr is located the staff created a makeshift kitchen and dining room in the hotel’s rotunda, including a searing 800 degree grill just outside in view of the guests. Welther noted that he started working for the Anatole 2 years before Van Camp was born thus he was able to stay inside and engage the guests while the young executive chef labored in the heat and prepared dinner on the grill.         Continue reading

Elevation Burger Is A Healthier Burger Option

by Steven Doyle    photos by Joey Stewart

Elevation Burger opened quietly in January of 2012 and is part of a chain of restaurants that started in Virginia by a man who wanted a burger similar to what he had while living in California. This meant organic, grass-fed and free range. Cow is just tastier when they are allowed to run around munching grass free of hormones and all the nasties that are so prevalent in our food today.

Elevation Burger dots the East Coast but moved into Austin in 2009. There are plans for two more Dallas locations that will be coming soon, but until then you can get a healthier burger option at the Hillcrest location.      Continue reading

Pecan Lodge Has Insane Weekend And Joins Our Top Five List For BBQ In Dallas

By Steven Doyle

Pecan Lodge has been one of our go-to spots for BBQ in Dallas since their debut at the Dallas Farmers Market. Owned by Diane and Justin Fourton, the duo has been busy making their mark on the BBQ landscape one rib at a time. And damn are those ribs tasty.

Recently the Fourton’s were featured on the Food Network slice of insanity, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives with Guy Fieri. Not sure if this little restaurant that is located in the Market’s Shed Two qualifies as a dive or a diner, it certainly isn’t a drive-in. Regardless, the program made a huge impact on the young business.           Continue reading

We Power Coupled At Del Frisco

by Steven Doyle

Last evening we tried out the summer Del Frisco Double Eagle Steak House deal, the Power Couple that offers a full meal for two at $99, not including drinks or gratuity.  We were met at the door by the familiar face of the sommelier Jennifer Jaco who had invited us in, and we were elated when she offered to give us a tour of the wine cellar after our dinner.

As you can imagine, the dinner was very good. What’s not to like about Chef David Holben’s steaks? The beef offered is a prime filet that is smattered with peppercorns and seared immaculately, as expected. But the star for us was the crab cake that is also included in the Power Couple deal. The crab cake was made of crab, some seasonings, and very little else. It didn’t take long to tackle the large cake.         Continue reading
