A Look Inside Shoyo, Chef Jimmy Park’s New Omakase Experience

By Joey Stewart             Pictures by Joey Stewart

Dallasites have been actively watching for the opening of Shoyo for months. Fans of Chef Jimmy Park (Nobu, Nori Handroll Bar) have been lining up to be one of the first to experience his new venture. After a few (typical) delays, a pop-up, and a much sought after soft opening invite to which thousands replied to on the Gram, it’s official.

Reservations are taken on Resy, but all spots were gone in mere minutes after they were released. We hit notifications for each night through June, and after several missed chances, we finally scored.

Ocean Prime Still in its Prime

by Joey Stewart photos by Joey Stewart

The last time CraveDFW featured Ocean Prime we showcased the huge Red King Crab legs that had just been flown in from Bristol Bay. As this was over two years ago, we thought it was time to head back and see how it’s keeping up with all the competing seafood spots that have opened in Dallas since that report.

Ocean Prime Uptown is one of sixteen locations across the states and boasts a menu that features items like sushi and poke, indulgent seafood entrees, prime steaks, desserts, signature cocktails, and a Wine Spectator-honored wine list.

The dark, retro dining room is still packed with well-heeled guests, the service is stellar from start to finish, and each dish we tasted was expertly cooked. In short, it hasn’t missed a step. We chose to sit in the more relaxed and bright “Terrace,” which allows for a casual dining experience.

First Look: Monarch

By Joey Stewart      Photos by Joey Stewart

Monarch, the highly anticipated wood-fired, modern Italian restaurant led by two-time Michelin-starred Chef Danny Grant has been open for two weeks and is already the hardest reservation to score in town. We were lucky enough to grab one at their opening hour of five o’clock, and here’s our first look.

Open kitchen with wood fired hearth. Diners in the north dining room are in full view of the action.

These Are a Few of Our Favorite Things: 2020

Ravioli at Homewood by Matt McCallister

Text + Photos by Joey Stewart

It’s a strange year to try and make any sort of “best of” list. We made it out several times before lockdown, then supported the scene by ordering take-out, and finally were able to venture out to a few patios when the weather would hold up. While there are dozens of options that we sadly missed, here are some favorites from our limited ventures out. (Or in).
