by Steven Doyle

This is the season for new restaurant openings, a fantastic sign that our economy must be perking up – or we are all really hungry. The latest news is from radioland where 103.7 Lite FM hosts Gene and Julie Gates reign supreme as a real life married couple that chat up early morning commuters with their witty banter and are the executive producers and talent of the Gene & Julie Show. Long been known as gourmets, the Gates are friendly with chefs, host foodie events, and dine extremely well across the Dallas restaurant landscape.        Continue reading →

First Look: MAX’s Wine Dive

by Steven Doyle

MAX’s Wine Dive makes its debut today with doors opening promptly at 4pm. This is the legendary restaurant that is known for their Kobe beef hot dog, fried chicken and Dom Perignon by the glass. It’s the bad boy of the neighborhood, inspired by the best dive bars in Texas, but with a wicked twist.  We checked out the restaurant last night during one of the preview events, and certainly were not disappointed.

The atmosphere is fairly typical with few exceptions. The restaurant features a large kitchen that is as wide as the bar and very open so you can view the action as your Veal Sweet Bread Pot Pie or Chicken Fried Brussel Sprouts are being concocted by chef Patrick Russell, formerly of Craft Dallas. Both of those dishes are crazy good. What is unexpected are the walls stuffed high and wide with glassware and bottles upon bottles of wine. It is interesting to note that chef Russell served us our last meal at Craft and our first at MAX’s. Continue reading →

Peak And Elm Concina And Bar Opening Soon In East Dallas

by Steven Doyle

The Moreno family, who owns several locations of La Popular Tamale House, have decided to open a Mexican restaurant in East Dallas in the growing artsy district at Peak and Elm.  In fact, the new restaurant will be called Peak and Elm Cocina and Bar.

The new restaurant has been under construction with great attention for detail to the existing space. The restaurant sits on what was formerly the street car line, and just across the street once housed the street cars at the end of their run through East Dallas. For this reason Jesse Moreno says he plans on bringing one of the original cars to the back patio area for private dining.      Continue reading →

East Hampton Sandwich Co Opens Wednesday

by Steven Doyle

There is a new sandwich shop opening up this week in Snider Plaza called the East Hampton Sandwich Company which is owned and operated by local entrepreneur Hunter Pond. This is Pond’s first foray into owning a restaurant, but he comes with some experience in the business. We sat with the 25 year old Pond to see what he has planned for the community of sandwich eaters. We broke the news of this restaurant some months ago, but have an interview with Pond today who explains what they have to offer.       Continue reading →

The Mecca Opens Today

by Steven Doyle

If you were saddened by the closure of the original Mecca on Harry Hines, now is your chance to bring on a smile. The new Mecca will swing open its doors with little fanfare at 4pm today. You will find The Mecca in its new digs at 5815 Live Oak in East Dallas.

This is not the first move for the iconic restaurant. The first location was opened in 1938 and eventually moved to its location you might be most familiar with on Harry Hines in a house where the sisters who ran the restaurant actually resided just above the dining room.          Continue reading →

We were out tooling around this morning and stumbled upon something new and exciting in the old Ali Baba location at 1906 Greenville Avenue. As a matter of fact we spotted Scott Jones from street level and turned the craveMOBILE around to get a chat and a photo.    Continue reading →

Quaker Steak and Lube Opens Today

by Steven Doyle

Last night we were invited to check out the latest edition of Quaker Steak and Lube, the casual dining chain hailing from Pennsylvania that is best known for their mountains of chicken wings and sauce choices. There were sampled most of what the restaurant had to offer and had a chance to visit with the CEO, John H. Longstreet.

The chicken wings recently became famous when Travel Channel’s Man vs Food host Adam Richman tackled the Triple Atomic challenge by devouring wings sauced with a searing 500,000 Scoville rated madness. That ventures well past the Scotch Bonnet and Habanero territory, and can be quite maddening on the palate.         Continue reading →
