New Restaurant and New Chef Announced at Luxe Stoneleigh

by Steven Doyle

We reported several months ago that the Stoneleigh Hotel is now Luxe Stoneleigh, and with that has undergone some needed changes at the hotel to the tune of $36 million dollars. The Stoneleigh has been a Dallas landmark since 1923 and has enjoyed a marvelous history.

This weekend we learned that there are more changes afoot at the Stoneleigh as their restaurant Bolla is phased out to make way for Texas-inspired cuisine in the new T/X Restaurant and Bar. Marcelo Vasquez was named executive chef just days ago. Vasquez was the executive chef at the Omni Fort Worth for the past five years and has a marvelous culinary background starting in his home country, Chile.   Continue reading →

Sneak Peek at TJ’s New Market on Oak Lawn

by Steven Doyle

We stopped in TJ’s Seafood Market’s newest venture located on Oak Lawn next to Julian Barsotti’s Carbone’s and just feet away from Nosh. TJ’s is owned by Jon and Natlie Alexis and together they have been planning this new concept for the past three years. They will not only have great seafood with an even larger selection than their original store located on Preston at Forest Lane in North Dallas, but will also feature a 24-seat restaurant.

Alexis says he does not want to be in the restaurant business, but rather offer fresh selections culled from the new seafood cases and will be offering chef-driven menu items that will include fish tacos, lobster rolls and full plated meals. To execute the restaurant portion of the market Alexis hired chef Scott Hoffner who ws most recently executive chef at Flippin’ Out Crepes.      Continue reading →

Ocho Kitchen and Cocktails Opens in Park Cities

by Steven Doyle

We checked out the very new Ocho Kitchen and Cocktails last night for a few bites and cocktails and was excited to see a fresh take on Mexican cookery. The restaurant takes us back to time spent in New Mexico with the freshly roasted chiles, house-made tortilla chips and a grand assortment of fresh salsas.

We were also happy to see a familiar toque in the kitchen. You might recall our visit to the now shuttered Commissary where we spoke briefly with chef Ross Demers. Demers has worked in some sturdy kitchens including The Mansion where he worked as sous for John Tesar and more recently at Mi Piaci.           Continue reading →

Joie de Vivre: Uchi is Opening in Dallas

by Robyn Folmar

I was in Austin this weekend for the Texas Monthly BBQ Festival and couldn’t pass up an opportunity to finally try Uchi.

The sake apparently went straight to my husband’s head because he insisted on the ten-course Chef’s tasting menu. Normally this tough guy dry heaves at the very thought of eating Aquaman’s sea friends. His principles were quickly jettisoned as we fought over the last raw oyster with honeycrisp apple sorbet and wasabi foam.     Continue reading →

First Look: Sisu Uptown Resort

by Steven Doyle

Sisu Uptown Resort opens its doors officially today and we took a peek yesterday afternoon. The new restaurant plays host to a fantastic bar with a great patio, but also features a members-only pool that plays into the resort theme. Owned and managed by Dan Bui (formerly of Ghost Bar) and a team of investors, Sisu is definitely not your average restaurant.  Continue reading →

First Look: East Hampton Sandwich Company

by Steven Doyle

Last week we saw one of the first of what will be a busy and exciting restaurant opening season. East  Hampton Sandwich Company opened its doors to a busier than normal crowd for a sandwich shop, but this is no ordinary sandwich shop, and certainly do not make ordinary sandwiches. We met with the dynamic Hunter Pond prior to the opening of his restaurant.

Before the opening Pond was a bit demure and obviously excited. Yesterday we went into the restaurant for the first time to taste what the young law grad had to offer, and he seemed to have morphed into this formidable host with a slight swagger and charm about him. He was still excited, and for a very good reason. It was 2pm in Snider Plaza and his restaurant was jumping. Each seat was filled with a happy guest.         Continue reading →
